| Pee Pad Training Hello, I'm new to the forum so I apologize if this question is redundant. I was reading other posts on Pee Pad training and couldn't find the resolution i need for my Yorkie. I've adopted my Yorkie about a year ago, (He's 2 years old and very Shy). With my Yorkie being shy around everything, hates the cold (We Live in Canada it's already 0 degrees and about to snow here),I decided to take up Pee Pad training. I still take my Yorkie on two walks a day and try to take him to the backyard if i notice he needs to Pee. I placed a Pee Pad in our back mud room and purchased a Dog Pee Grass Pad. My yorkie probably uses the Pee Pad about 80% of the time. But how do I encourage my Yorkie to only use the Pee Pad? Is there any secret treatments? encouragements? My yorkie doesn't seem to be using the Pee Grass Pad. I just really want to keep my bedroom doors open all day long, but if i do It'll find pee in one of them. |

| Persistence and Consistence. Reward good behavior. Every time you notice your puppy potty on the potty pad......throw him a big party with treats You are already off to a good start if he is using the potty pads 80% of the time......you just need a little reinforcement to get it to that 100% You may have to close your door at least until he is 100% potty pad train. Take him to the potty pads and say "potty" when he potties, praise him and give him a treat........rinse and repeat until he gets it. If he potties where he isn't supposed to just clean the spot with nature's miracle or something similar and not scold him. If you scold him, he will only potty in secret somewhere else. Reward good behavior, ignore bad behavior.......works every time but it does take some patience and understanding. Eventually he will catch on a learn that pottying on the potty pads is a good thing and will go just to the potty pads exclusively. It took a little bit of time, but my Duchess is 100% potty pad train and she still goes outside. It didn't confuse her at all. I love that she has a place to potty indoors while I'm away but she will still potty outside. In fact, she prefers to poop outside and will wait all day until I come her to walk to poop but if I wait too long to walk her, she will poop on the potty pad. She is so trained to using the potty pad that even she when she has the occasionally bout of colitis, she will try her best to make it to the potty pad. Also my Duchess will stop using the potty pads if they become to soiled so i have to change them often. I also use the washable pads to save on money and the enviroment Last edited by yavenay; 10-27-2017 at 07:51 AM. |

| Ummm, just noticed you said your dog was shy. My Cali has her piddle pads in the half bath and if faithful with them, it if one one is in there or around she will not go there. So be sure younpup has the privacy they may need.

| Thank you everyone for the input and advice! It'll take this information away and offer my Yorkie High Value treats! I've been to many other forums on the internet and a lot of them were worried that i was going to use Pee Pads. But I don't want my dog having to wait to go to the bathroom. |

| Interesting- my gal has never used anything but her piddle pads but I know many use both inside and out. It is really nice on those cold and stormy days. Most of the show people only raise their pups on indoor pads!

| Pee pads Hi. Glad you are having good success with the pad training. My boy is 8 now and was never pad trained before I adopted him, but when he went to a sitter for a week, he came back seeming to know how to use pads. All the advice for training given above sounds great and certainly praise and treats are helpful. I never scold him if he misses. My dog is taken out often but sometimes he will go on the pads on his own if his needs are not when I take him out. I see that although he hits the pad most of the time, he can pee off the pad, perhaps as his aim is off, as he does it at the edge. He appears to poop on a pad different from the ones he pees on. ( I lay out about four pads next to a sliding glass window.). He also does not seem to care if the pads are used and not fresh. But I do change them when they get a few pees on them. It is interesting that in the early morning, after several sleeping hours, he needs to pee badly after eating (which always comes first however badly he wants to pee!!!). If I don't take him outside immediately after he has eaten his food, he will pee on the pad and move towards the door for me to take him out for some more smells and pees! Unlike most humans one pee is not enough! I think his first mini pee is just to tell me to take him out as he prefers to do that. Last edited by dottiesyrky; 10-27-2017 at 10:01 AM. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Potty patch My yorkie's refuse to go out to potty when it's raining . I was thinking of getting a potty patch suppose to look like grass . Was wondering if it's a good idea and also will I need to get them their own patch or will they use the same one |

| Rain and potty pads That is a pain if they won't go out in the rain. Luckily mine will go in the rain but hates wind noise. I have a raincoat for my dog, and that is good. Your dogs may like a grass type potty area or not? Also who knows if they will use the same one? Each dog is different and has different requirements! The pads I use have some scent on them that is supposed to attract the dog to go on them and that's what I use with success. Good luck, I hope you find what works for your babies. |
