| Help!!!! My little Bo is a Great soul. He is the calmest Yorkie you'll ever meet. BUT nail-clipping time comes along, and he absolutely FREAKS OUT! He will not allow me or anyone else cut his nails. Something deep-seated in his puppy past makes him dread getting his nails cut. Maybe they clipped into a cuticle 2 or 3 times during one nail clipping session- if you see how he acts you would conclude likewise. I cannot wrap him in a towel, give him treats, etc. and I won't allow the vet to do it since Bo will feel the same way. It is PURE TORTURE for him. I am thinking getting a sedative from the vet, but I am very afraid of it since I've read horror stories on YT about it. But short of general anesthesia by the vet, I don't know what will work. HELP!! Last edited by dpframing; 08-17-2017 at 07:09 PM. |

| Does he let you touch his paws? If not I would work on that first. Then you can give him treats near the nail clippers.

| Dunno if this helps, but this is my experience... I used to trim Scottie's nails, but haven't done so in over a year. I walk them outdoors a few times a day. I discovered that asphalt and concrete sidewalks is a natural nail filer when I noticed that their nails didn't require trimming. I've never once had to trim Casie's nails.

| Pawfect! Our little girl is great about letting me touch her paws, ears, look at the teeth, check her little bum for trimming, but NAILS?? Oh, no! We have worked on this for two years now. My challenge is eye sight. I wear very strong bifocals - I mean VERY strong. So it takes me too long to focus once she's still and then she's moving again. I use a front back called "outward hound" that puts her paws through holes in front. She gets a treat after each front paw (used to be after every nail) and the back feet require more consistent treats. It's very challenging, to say the least. She's also learned I count 1-2-3-4 and then YAY! a treat! I found it helps if I trim the hair first. I keep styptic powder handy incase we hit a cuticle. She has one nail which is notoriously easy to trim too short. I turn on lots of light so I can see better. We have learned to do this together by trial and error, tricks and treats, and a lot of patience extended both ways. |
