So, it's *not* true that anyone *needs* to get their dog used to a crate.

| How about we agree that dogs need to get used to confinement, whether it be crate, carrier, cage, or kennel? Our Bella prefers to be in her carrier when we are away from the house, because she feels secure. However, she HATES cages and kennels at the vet's office. I think that's more because it's a strange environment (and she knows that something unpleasant is probably going to happen to her). |

| It can stress dogs out to be put into a crate at the vets office when they are not used to it. I have seen it and heard about it. There are many reasons dogs should learn to at least tolerate the crate.

| It can be really important for our dogs to feel secure and contented in their crate, especially when you are dealing with workmen and they are coming and going in and out the doors or there's an emergency of some kind, toddlers are visiting or the dog is crate-confined during rehab. Tibbe often self-crates in his airline carrier between the den couch and wall and snores away when I'm up and busy. At times, he leaves the bed and finishes his sleep there if he's heard a noise outside he feels he must monitor.

| I'm encouraged by the training tips and your personal anecdotes. I've moved the crate closer, removed the cover and as soon as I did, he walked right into it. Still a struggle at bedtime, but not to the degree as before. I'll continue to train him with positive reinforcement as I want him to have a safe and comfortable 'room' on standby. Great conversation. Kathy (and Morris) |
