| 9 week old Yorkiepoo with upper respiratory infection and teething issues This is my first post....we got Gypsy one week ago and had to take her to the vet last night. She has an upper respiratory infection and teething issues. She has been put on an antiobiotic for 7 days and now needs to have canned food because of the teething issue. Does anyone have any recommendations for what canned food is best |

| Where did you get her from? I'm wondering if she had the upper respiratory infection when you got her. If she did its possible other pups in her litter could be sick too. What kinda of teething issues?

| I got her in Albuquerque from a breeder....she was fine when we picked her up. She has one sister that lives in Denver CO and I hear she is fine. The teething issue is normal teething, says the vet...it is just that her gums are so swollen she can't eat kibble so she has to eat canned food for awhile. |

YT 500 Club Member | Yes, that doesn't sound normal. Because her gums are so swollen be sure and check daily for adult teeth coming in behind or in front of baby teeth. Hope she feels better soon.

| You can see the new teeth under the swollen gums. Poor little girl.....hopefully she feels better really soon. It is kind of scary for us as we have never had a puppy as small as she is. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Sooooo....this is important: she probably was given the Kennel Cough (bordetella) vaccine and that is where she contracted her URI (upper resp infection). Bordetella is *not* a core vaccine. The core (necessary) vaccines are rabies, parvo, and distemper. I have never given my dogs bordetella, nor will I. If I were you, I would not get this vaccine again for your pup. More about vaccine protocol HERE. The most important thing now is to be sure that this infection does NOT progress to pneumonia, which is so common in puppies. Watch and treat closely!!!

| Because it doesn't always cause a reaction. Lots of dogs get it with no issues. My almost 10 year old girl has always gotten it and no issues. Both my pups have had it and no issues. For most groomers it is required. I take my dogs to lots of dog events and places so it is recommended. Did you vet give that vaccine? Seems kind young for that.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | In my opinion, most vets give/promote and OVERvaccinate Bordetella vaccine indiscriminately - to be totally honest. "Kennel Cough" is the dog version of the human cold. It's just kinda ridiculous...bc like the human cold, there are hundreds of strains of "kennel cough". And the Bordetella vaccine vaccinates for only about 7 of them. So yeah, you tend to ask yourself..."why give it then..?" -- exactly . It's not very useful at the end of the day, it's most certainly not necessary, and it can def cause issues in puppies that can go on for months and months.
