NJ Banning dog sales LAW-- May pass

They're hoping to pass it by June 30th... I hope they amend it so that it only affects petstores and not legit breeders.

Do you mean that they do not want dogs sold at all? Why would they pass a law to do that? I don't understand. Do you know the reason they don't want dogs sold in NJ? You mean all dogs,right? Makes no sense to me. Hope it is not for legitimate breeders too.

I read about it earlier this month, the law was originally aimed at petstores and puppy mills but amended to breeding , can only sell 10 puppies yearly.

Ill find the law later. Its aimed to pass june 30th. Saw it on news 12 nj today.

Yeah, but it got amended so it will affect breeders as well...

Originally it _only_ affected puppy mills and petstores, but now it got amended and it'll affect breeders too... While small dog breeds only produce a few pups per litter. (2-3 usually and 5 at most), bigger breeds I believe can have a litter from 6-12 pups from what I've been told. So some dog breeds cant even be bred, and it's a bit more complicated.

I've read most competing show dog breeders who breed to better the breed usually do so once a year or every other year. If that's the case, then one litter whether yielding 4-5 small breed puppies or 9-10 large breed puppies doesn't seem outrageous to me.

I only know from my own experience...
My breeder has only bred every other year. After a litter is born, they monitor the puppies for the first few months for show potential (they don't sell them off at 12-15 weeks). As the puppies develop, the show qualities become more prominent. Then, they keep two or three puppies until 5 or 6 months old before deciding on their champion(s) potential. Then, they start training them and showing them. By the next year, their chosen one (or two) start earning points in the competition. They continue to show them until they earn their champion status and then grand champion status. So...it would be every two years they'd have puppies, if not longer.

So, from my experience, this new law seems to make sense. It seems that this law will eliminate backyard breeders who are breeding as a source of income. These type of breeders have multiple dogs breeding throughout the year. Oftentimes, they inbreed as well (as in the dogs are all related), where inbreeding has been known to increase risks of health problems.

You're only taking under consideration small dog breeds... Small dog breeds produce a very small litter per pregnancy...


My problem is that this will limit small dog breeders to 2 litters a year or 3 at most which is fine, but what about the ones who want to breed larger dog breeds?


You do realize that it's not impossible for a larger dog breed to have over 10 puppies per litter? So what if they get 14-16 puppies? Or what if they happened to have a dog that had 24 puppies?Yeah 24 is very rare and very high but that's a lot more than the limit.... and you can't say they'd keep those extra 4, 6, or 14 puppies just to show them... I doubt anyone has the space, time, $$$ to successfully house that amount of dogs without issues.


Look I am not saying people should be go breeding dogs like crazy. But there shouldn't be a number ban- there should be a number of times ban.

Instead of making it harder to sell larger amounts of dogs(from the same litter) they should make an amendment where if a dog happens to have a really large litter it does not apply to them.

For small dogs they should be allowed 3-5litters per breeder(and I am not saying breed the same exact dog, but sometimes breeders have like 5-6 females, and a few males), while for larger dog breeds should be limited at 2-3 tops.

I am not promoting backyard breeders, or pumping out puppies like puppymills.... but they should be made so that it doesn't affect the number of puppies a female yields per pregnancy... as you cant control that...

I just don't want to see that larger breeds become non-existent over here because of the limit... and realize if this law passed over here, it'll probably spread to other states...


I like that this will cripple pet stores who sell dogs, or just puppymills.... but I am not even sure it'd affect them because the people who don't abide the law will probably breed them in secret anyways...
