| Need help with Mister Pooch Hello everyone, I've had Mr. Pooch, now two weeks. He is eating better, only eats the Science Diet as long as it is mixed with canned meat or cooked chicken, which is really okay as he is still very thin. The problem I now have with him is that he doesn't want to be alone (I guest it from the previous owner who caged him 14 hours or more). When I take him out in the back yard I have to be there with him, even when I sit in the screen room he checks on me every few minutes. Its cold today in Tallahassee, only 45 degrees and I don't want to freeze out there. So I went inside and immediately he went to the gate trying to dig out. The minute I called him he came flying in there with me. Is this a common trait? Always on my walks 3 times daily, he can't pass a tree, mailbox, plant or anything without marking it. He's not neutered yet, the vet said to wait until next month when he puts on a little weight. His coat is starting to become so shiny and silky. Thirdly, how do I socialize him, the squirrels in the backyard are not afraid of him as he just looks at them and doesn't chase them. Finally he is yet to bark or even whine. Thanks all for reading this. I know 45 isn't that cold since I grew up in New Jersey, but after living in Florida 30 years I can only handle warm weather. Take care everyone, Misters Ed and Pooch Last edited by eddiejjr; 01-29-2017 at 08:08 AM. |

| Small dogs really shouldn't be left alone outside, there are to many things that can harm them. Poor guy, I'm thinking I wouldn't want to be alone after that either. Even our neutered male dogs would mark everything on walks I always just think of it as a normal boy thing lol.

| Mr. Pooch I like your dog's name. Mr. Pooch is cute. It is true they do not like to be left alone especially after what he was put through. Such inhumane torture! Thank you for getting him out of that situation. To socialize him just get him out of the house. Take walks and car rides and take him as many places as you can. Yorkies are social by nature. How old is Mr. Pooch? That can have a lot to do with socializing him too. Since he has been kept confined for so many long hours it may be more difficult for him to adjust to this new life too. How long was he kept in such a sad life? He may be afraid to venture out into new territory or he could be extremely eager to see what in this big new world he now has. If the weather is too cold for you it must be too cold for him especially as he was caged like that I hope he wasn't caged outdoors. Thank you for asking help as it shows you are concerned for his well being. Let us know how it goes with him and show us pictures if you can. We love pictures.

| Little honey! I agree that Mr. Pooch must never be alone outside, period. A tragedy can occur in a split second--from the ground or from the air. As for barking, etc., enjoy your quiet canine while it lasts. Piper was quiet for the the first few months, but has more than made up for lost time; whether barking fiercely when someone is at the front door or letting me know she must have a treat right now, this very minute, cannot wait another second, Piper has found her many voices. I know what you mean about the squirrels because when in the backyard, birds on the ground don't flap off in a panic when Piper comes out, usually they just hop away. Nothing like a Yorkie!! Sounds like you're doing an amazing job with Mr. P; your love and patience is providing him the security he needs to come into his own. |

| How wonderful, you will make his lifegreat. I hope you like company in the potty room! They don't leave you for more than a few minutes at a time. He will be your best friend and be extremely protective over you... To socialize I put the Yorkies over the bigger dogs mind that you know the dogs well. But Ialways hold the yorkie over my other dogs. Nose to nose they socialize quickly usually in less then and hour. But my yard dogs come in if it's too hot or too cold and at night .The 3big dogs protect the yard we have 5 acers and the yorkies protect the front door😊 Just give him time and expect him to be with you ALOT😋 When you take him out on walks if a big dog comes up walking there person I would pick him up. Unless you know the family and the dogs know one another. Good luck to you both👍💖 |

| Cody is my 5th yorkie and I will tell you this, as much as they LOVE to be out doors, cried and whined to go to the yard, I was always with my now passed girls and am ALWAYS out side when Cody is in the yard. Cody is adopted we are a team for 3 years now,the yard is STILL new to him, when we are outside and I have forgotten something in the house and have to come back in, that boy is right behind me, as much as he LOVES his yard he will NOT stay outside alone, my girls were the same way. They need to have their humans in their sight at all times. It "could" also be because he was caged for so many hours. I can only speak from my experience having owned 5 yorkies, they would NOT stay outside alone, I had to be within their sight. Since Mr Pooch is known to start digging at the fence he shouldn't be trusted for a minute in the yard without you several feet from him. To socialize him with dogs you can take him to PetCo, PetSmart or Pet Supplies, only have him meet and greet dogs his size for now to see how be behaves with dogs, if he is not scared or aggressive, after a few weeks of him meeting his size you can start letting him meet medium size dogs, BUT, always ask the owner FIRST if their dog is friendly. To socialize with ppl, you can take him to Lowes, Home Depot and Bed, Bath and Beyond, here in Pa. these stores allow dogs, I am sure there are many more. If he is not carrying on when see he sees a squirrel, he's not barking or whining, get on your KNEES and thank GOD lol. My boy has ripped curtains brackets out of my walls when he sees those pesky squirrels lol, count your blessings lol. I wouldn't worry about the non barking / whining, maybe the prev. owner forbid him to bark or whine, and not to worry about him not getting excited over squirrels he may in time. You only have him a few weeks, he is still adjusting to his new life with you. Happy to hear Mr Pooch is eating, there are not many calories in chicken if you are looking to get some weight on him, when you say you give him "canned meat" is it canned dog food?
