Default Hello everyone

Yesterday, I rescued a little Yorkie, he has no name yet. I think I should call him escape artist as he has already tried to escape from the house. He was being abandoned by someone. He very matted and thin, and will not even treats. I bought, food, bed, a cage and many toys but he seems afraid of everything. I am taking him to the Vet on Monday for a check up, all necessary shots, to be neutered and to be bathed and groomed. I will try and take a before and after photo of him. He is blonde with silver undercoating but very matted. I have had dogs in the past but always raised from puppies. He seems young, but hopefully the vet will be able to determine his age. Tried to walk him, it was a disaster, he will need much training. I have never seen a little dog that could move so fast, when I put in the backyard for potty, he took off like a flash, thank God I have a fence or he would have been gone.

This is my first Yorkie and first rescued dog. I would appreciate all the tips possible especially how I get some weight on him, since he doesn't want to eat. Thanks all, Ed.

Watch him very carefully--as until she realized she was truly home--Piper would try to dash out at any opportunity. She, too, is like lightning. All I can suggest is that you show patience, understanding, and lovelovelove and it'll all work out. Be ever-vigilant as you cannot trust him (not to dash) for a very long time. Bless you for rescuing this needy little guy; he will be yours with endless love before you know it!

Welcome to YT and thank you for rescuing. I too have a rescue a surrender by prev. owner. This poor baby sounds like he was very neglected and not loved. You will need much patience with him and give lots of TLC. My boy was not neglected, he was loved much, he was surrendered for financial reasons. He didn't know how to play with toys because he never had any, over time he is now the yorkie he was meant to be. You may never know what his past was, how he was treated, remember you are a stranger to him, and he is scared. He is in a home where everything is strange and scary, new smells, sounds, surroundings. Everything with this dog needs to be done in baby steps. He has to gain TRUST in YOU, he has to bond with YOU, he has to learn you will keep him safe. Be very careful opening your front door if he is "bolting", maybe confine him to a room where he is not near the door. Leash walking sounds like it's something new to him and that will take some time for him to adjust to. Great that you have a vet appointment for Monday. Sounds like this guy has found a wonderful loving home, something he needs to learn also. Don't worry about a name lol, you will find a perfect one for him. Please keep us posted on his adjustment in his new life.

Default Need more help

I have now had My rescued Yorkie, since Sat 600pm EST. He has not made a sound. Earlier today in the backyard there was a squirrel only a few feet away he just looked and did nothing. About 1 hr ago (9pm) took him for a evening walk, cat from across the street crossed in front of us, no barking, no reaction at all. Can he be mute? I still have no name for him yet, he drank water today, but hardly ate any food, I tried some peanut butter on a treat, he did not touch. I really can't image what was done to him, by whomever owned him before. Currently I just call him Mr. Pooch, and I have fallen in love with my little one.

Thanks again,
Ed

Hi Ed & Welcome to YT !
Where did this little guy come from ? He may be missing his family & is why he's trying to escape & not eating. As for him not eating,, yorkies can become Hypoglycemic if they don't eat so it's important to get him to eat something. You can give him boiled boneless skinless chicken & white rice, mine like steamed brocolli, green beans & PURE canned pumpkin, apple & bananas. NO pork or turkey dark meat, very lean beef is ok as well. Best to go to a pet store & get some good quality food. Glad you have a vet appt as he might not be eating due to mouth/tooth pain. As for the cat & squirrel, he may just not be interested in them & it's possible he lived with a cat before so he's just cat friendly. If you are worried he could escape out the front door, I would be putting a baby gate there. Also don't use a collar for walking but instead use a harness & the step-in harness is the best as other harnesses can put pressure on his trachea just like a collar AND yorkies Do Not like to sleep alone so if he can't sleep in your bed then at least put his crate in your room & be sure to put something cushy for him to sleep on & mine like to be covered up at night with their blankies.

One more thing, he's most likely not mute and after he becomes more comfortable with his new human/s & surroundings he will find his voice & you might regret it, lol. Looking forward to hearing how his vet visit goes & how he comes along in the days/weeks ahead. If you think you love him now, just wait till you really get to know each other. You will wonder how you ever lived without a yorkie in your life & will most likely NEVER again be without one.

I would try the boiled boneless chicken cutlets and rice, most all dogs cannot resist chicken, just to get him to eat something, I would not recommend this as a steady diet as there is not much nutrients in rice. If you are feeding kibble try sprinkling a little grated Parmesan cheese on top of it, the smell usually gets their taste buds going. You can also try to moisten the kibble with a little water, or UNSALTED NO ONION added canned chicken broth, this will soften the food the chicken will add yummy flavor to the food. As lillymae suggested he may have problems with teeth causing him pain. Yorkies are notorious picky eaters. Pet Supplies, Pet Smart and PetCo usually have small sample bags of kibble, you can get several varieties and see which one he likes. As bad as a dog may have been treated his loyalty is ALWAYS with his owner, that was the only life he knew, he could be missing that owner another reason he is not eating well. I would not worry about no reaction to a cat or squirrel, this little guy is going through so many adjustments, he is confused, scared, WHO ARE YOU and WHERE IS MY MOMMA or DADDY. If his coat is dirty and matted this is also making him uncomfortable to. Good that you are taking him to the vet today.

Good news. Mr. Pooch's visit to the VET was excellent. He had no problems besides needing to gain a few pounds. He is completely transformed with his bath and being groomed. I really love the little guy. The vet did say to wait a few or so for the neutering, once he's gained weight. He even wanted to play a little last night.

Thanks all,
Ed & Mr. Pooch

My heart is singing, so happy the vet gave him a clean bill of health, and he has gotten a much needed bath and grooming, now wanting to play absolutely WONDERFUL. Remember "baby steps" with this little guy and ALWAYS have him on a leash when he is NOT in your yard. He is NOT going to transform into the yorkie he was meant to be over night, it all takes time. The most fantastic thing is that you have already fallen in love with this little guy and he will feel that love and lose some of that fear he has. Just have patience, speak in soft tones and never scold harshly. He is in a new learning process with you as his new owner, he now has to learn YOUR WAY of him doing things, and that is not an over nighter for him.

Is he eating and drinking water?

Please keep us updated on his new life with you.
