| Yorkie puppy not sleeping Hello everyone! This is my first time posting anything and first time I ever own a puppy as well. I want to say thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to respond, and thank you to everyone that has helped me through this new experience! My husband and I purchased a teacup yorkie puppy last Thursday. We are having a lot of trouble with her sleeping through the night. This is her regular schedule: in the morning she will first wake up and eat, potty, and play for a while and then take a nap. She will do this all day, every hour or so. I work from home so she is with me all day. She eats very well and looks happy and has no signs of stress. When we go to bed around 9-10PM, she will take a while falling asleep, but she eventually falls asleep after whining for a while. She will then wake up about 2 hours later to potty, and then she will fall asleep, again, after whining for a little bit. At around 3AM, she will wake up, potty, sometimes she eats, and then she wants to stay up and play. We have tried letting her cry and whine for a while, but she is so loud (she is sleeping in our room in her own bed). We have even tried putting her in our bed, even though we do not want her to get used to sleeping with us, but she will just jump on us and want to play. This goes on for about an hour until eventually she will fall asleep after crying so much or my husband gets up and sits next to her. We are so exhausted and we just don't know what to do. Should I try purchasing a crate and putting her in it in another room? Any advice is very much appreciated! Thank you all so much! |

| You have to let them cry it out and it can take a few weeks. When she makes up crying take her potty then put her back and if she cries you have to ignore it. If she goes to sleep and then wakes up crying take her potty and repeat until you get up for the day. Having a pup is like having a new human baby it's hard work.

| One key is exercise! The more she runs around, the better--hour or so before bed, maybe try some intense play, little drink, outside, settle-down snuggles, then bed. Once she's had all her shots and is cleared for go, you can take her out and about and that will do wonders in her zonking out...She's just a wonderfully healthy, happy, energetic Yorkie---and that's a lot of energy! You'll all be fine, just a bit of a break-in period! |

| Try putting something of yours in her bed. A shirt, a pair of sweat pants - anything that has your smell. We did that with all of our puppies. My last Yorkie slept with my son's nylon pants until the day he left us. Also, we use an Iris crate for our two dogs now. Although they sleep in our bed (on top of one of my sweat shirts) they still go into the crate when they need to feel safe. They have beds and a blanket in there and we keep the door open so they can come and go at will. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. The first year was the hardest for me. Puppy energy! I lost a lot of sleep. Max slept from midnight to about 5 am, when he needed to potty. Eventually they do settle down and fall into a rhythm. Try having a daily routine. As noted above, exercise during the day is key. Having brief play sessions, training, and walks (when she is old enough/has her shots) helps. A baby Yorkie is like having a newborn human baby.

| When we brought our yorkie home we put her in a crate beside the bed. We would play with her before bed then put her in the crate. We went to sleep and she seemed to know that we were right by her. Also they do cry but you have to ignore them they will go to sleep. After four months our kid figured out we were in a bed so that did not go over too good. She sleeps with us with her own pillow .Just have patience and it will work out for your baby. Baby years are hard but they go by so fast I wished I could go back to those years. My Kinder is a little over six years now it is hard to believe. Have fun with your puppy hope you have many years of joy. Susan |

| Thank you! Thank you all so much for the fast replies! We purchased a crate for her yesterday because the breeder told me she was sleeping in her own crate before I picked her up. She cried and whined the majority of the night but we just ignored her. She had food, water, and also had gone to the bathroom so I'm guessing she was whining for attention. We will continue to do this and try all of your suggestions. It's a slow process. Thanks again for all your help! |
