You're entirely missing everyone's point here in this thread bc you haven't stopped for a minute to listen to what we're saying here. You're not listening, you're just defending some rather poor vet care. This isn't about defending yourself - it's about this poor vulnerable little dog who is in your care. I wish you could get the part of it that has nothing to do w/ being defensive. This is about the PUPPY. Hope he continues to do okay.

Oh I got everyone's point entirely but agree with the vet. He wasn't sick at the time of surgery I was just treating him like a baby not a dog. I was thinking it would be easier to push out the surgery but it wasn't necessary to do that.

Also appreciate the vet who has had a tiny yorkie telling me not to treat them any different than any other dog. They are smaller but still a dog. I asked for pain meds and he felt baby aspirin was appropriate. If it's not protocol to give pain meds who are we to question years worth of schooling and surgery on hundreds of animals. Sons dog that had surgery last week to remove a squeaker toy from his intestines didn't go home with pain meds either. Maybe they don't believe in over medicating?

Do we question our drs with ourselves or our children? I don't...I trust they are skilled at their job way more than I would be trying to do their job.

What I'm defending is that I trust my vet. He's never done anything for me to distrust him. I'm hoping the vet has his best interest in heart well as I do.

Ok I'm not sure you get this but aspirin is a blood thinner and should never ever be given before or after surgery no matter what your vet says and it's a fact! It's also a fact the the AVMA said protocol is to not give aspirin or tell people to give their pets aspirin because of stomach bleeding and such. Those are facts whether you choose to believe them or not. I can tell you my 8 pound 7 month old puppy was definitely in pain after his regular neuter and needed pain meds. Dogs are EXTREMLY good at hiding pain and when you cut anything off or out of them you should ALWAYS do pain meds. People and pets do not heal as well when they are hurting. Wouldn't you have rather given him pain meds and be wrong then him suffering and hiding it from you? If you vet doesn't follow protocol I would be extremely concerned with what else he isn't following the AVMA about.

Yes, I absolutely question and fully research virtually EVERYTHING my daughter's doctors recommend. If I had not since she was 12 mo old, she would be deaf in both ears, blind in one eye, and have a damaged liver. Had I known to question everything earlier in her life, she would not have all the debilitating medical conditions she now has. Because I trusted a doctor, she now suffers greatly and will for the remainder of her life. I will forever live with that regret, and I will never blindly go forth again.

Since you asked: I am someone who has had surgery and know it HURTS. I am someone who decades ago, before I learned better, has watched two dogs who "did not need pain meds" whimper for hours if not days and gimp along in pain after surgery. I am also someone who has worked in pharmacy for 25 years and have completed numerous CEs on the further damage done and delay in healing to someone who is not properly treated for pain management.

I truly hope all goes well for you and yours.

ETA: In the past I sat crying with my suffering pet who "did not need pain meds" after surgery while the vet slept comfortably in their bed.

Do you know what they call the person who graduates at the bottom of their medical school class...???? A DOCTOR.

HECK YES I question my doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lawyers, whatever. If you really think you shouldn't question people, then whoa, I am seriously frightened for you and any creatures in your care.

My bachelors degree is in nursing - and let me tell you: you should not *ever* blindly trust anyone, most especially in the medical field, merely bc they have passed schooling and obtained a professional title.

I'm floored by your naivete / innocence - but if you're comfortable handing over your life to others, I suppose all I can do is really hope for and wish you the best. Good luck!
