Max has gone under the knife..poor baby We went to the vets this morning expecting to talk them out of fixing Max since he's been sick but they determined the loose stools were from the rice and chicken I was feeding him when he was sick on Friday. He needed to pretend to be sick instead of running all over kissing everyone! We got chewed out by the vet and the assistant because porker butt gained 5 ounces in 2 months...the boy does love his cat food treats! He weights 7 lbs 8 ounces and they said his frame shouldnt be over 6 lbs. so when he's feeling better we need to cut back on his food and exercise him more. They said he has no waist to speak of and a layer of fat...yes they said fat on his belly. They called him "Portly" and a chunk. I said he comes by his nickname bubble butt honestly. He's sleeping and not too active but has gone potty and ate a couple tablespoons. Hopefully tomorrow will be better for him...missing testicle wasn't too far from the other but he did end up with 2 incisions. |
Error in weight gain...it was 3 lbs in 2 months not ounces. He does love his food! |
Dogs do not pretend to be sick. I genuinely hope this does not negatively affect your puppy. He should not have had an operation while sick. |
Oh gosh, I hope he will be okay. I really would have allowed any vet to talk me into not advocating for and protecting my baby. You're in charge here, not the vet. I would not have allowed this surgery, to be honest. |
WOW can't believe that you let this Vet talk you into having the surgery. Thank heavens my Vet isn't like this. |

He was really sick on Friday but only had loose stools by Monday and not watery just a little softer. When we got to the vets he was running around kissing everyone so was hard to talk them into waiting when he was obviously feeling better. It's a country vet so they are more layer back than a city vet. Called to tell them he whimpered thru the night and they just said pick up baby aspirin, give him 1/2 twice a day. City vet would had me bring him in, run tests. Love the vet and he raised a tiny yorkie so knows what they can tolerate. And was very upset I let Max gain so much weight, so it shows he's concerned for his health and well being. Max is on the bed tonight playing and won't listen that he's suppose to take it easy. But I think a diet and exercise is in his future when 100%. |

But honestly a "good vet" wouldn't have said "go get BABY ASPIRIN"...!! Do you realize this poor little vulnerable creature had major abdominal surgery...??? An undescended testicle results in abdominal surgery - which is major, and PAINFUL. A "good vet" would've sent that poor baby home w/ a pain injection already on board and a prescription level pain medication to give for the next 5 days. I'm sorry, but in my opinion - you do not have a good vet here at all. In fact, I'm really pretty appalled by the lack of care given this poor innocent baby. :( You need to advocate for this little one, he's relying on you - and only you - for that. |

They sent you home without pain meds?! This vet is no good. Appalling. He should have had medication prescribed. You do not just send an animal home without pain meds. |
I agree with all above, your baby should have been 100 well before neutering, also sent home with pain killer meds. We have to have 100% trust in our vets, and I see that you do, however, for a vet to send home a dog that has just had major surgery with no pain killer is a vet that I would not want to use in the future. Just because he has a yorkie does not make him a "good" veterinarian for the breed. I hope your little boy is feeling better soon. |
We have always been told male dogs do not need pain meds after surgery. We have always told the vet no pain meds, no surgery; non-negotiable. Amazingly, we have always left with pain meds. There is no way I want a doc to cut me open and remove organs from me and tell me no pain meds, so there is no way I will tolerate that for my pups. It is not like we are talking morphine here; they only prescribe a small amount of low dose tramadol. Unless Max is predisposed to blood clots, Aspirin should not be taken before or immediately after surgery. It is a blood thinner and dramatically increases the likelihood of internal bleeding post-op. We had one of furry buddies undergo a simple neutered (no undicended testicles) and he bleed so much internally a six-seven inch diameter circle on his belly was bright purple....and that was without aspirin use. |

We opted for laser surgery and follow up laser therapy afterwards. Keeps pain down, helps with swelling and heals way quicker. Our city vets in town don't have that option but our little country vet kind of insists saying it's so much better for them. He has no redness or swelling so happy with the outcome using laser. |
