Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() Hi all, Well...it may be time for our Wylie to wear a belly band or diaper. With alllllll of his health issues, age, and being blind - the indoor peeing just is no longer going well and we're thinking he may need to wear a band or diaper. Do you recommend one over the other? (belly band vs diaper) Disposable or re-usable? What pads are best? Does their fur get all full of pee/dirty? NOTE: Wylie drinks a TON and I mean a TON....mainly bc of his Cushings and CHF (both medicated/titrated properly at present) -- so there will be a LOT of pee! Thanks for any help!!! ![]() Save

| ![]() I'd say belly band. That's what my eldest boy, Bijou, uses. He's a senior at 16 years old and he has developed issues with peeing, usually during sleep, within the last couple years due to his old age. I use the poise maximum absorbency pads. He needs those types of pads otherwise the pee goes right through cause he pees a lot. I did try other cheaper pads but they just don't absorb well enough to work. I tried diapers before and they just didn't fit Bijou well and he didn't like wearing them and they just didn't seem to work very well. Plus the belly bands are a lot more stylish. I ordered Bijou's off of Best Belly Bands. They're out of Texas, have a ton of different designs to choose from, custom make the belly band you order to the exact measurement you provide so you get a proper fit for your dog, and the money goes to a rescue group down there I believe. You can find them and order through Facebook if you do end up getting a belly band through them. I'd definitely consider belly bands over diapers though. I'm very very happy with the ones I got for Bijou. |

| ![]() That site looks interesting. I have not had this problem for about 15 years now. My Bichon became incontinent after bladder surgery for stones. I tried diapers but do you know what a mess those things are when they are shredded ![]() After that I tried belly bands and they worked pretty well. His belly was shaved of hair that would get in the way of the pad so that kept the pee smell down some. Only problem was I was working so didn't change it often enough during the day and he got a rash. The rash cleared up with anti fungal powder. My sweet boy lived in belly bands for the last 4 years of his life and passed at 17 1/2. Now both the yorkies are 11 and so far in good health. I hope you find something comfortable and effective for your sweet little guy.

| ![]() I've attached a picture of what I got when I placed my order and to show you what they look like. They're really good quality and the ends velcro together. I've never had any issues with the belly band not staying or fitting very well. It's one of the best things I've ever bought for Bijou. You just gotta make sure you measure your dog correctly. Make sure you measure pretty tightly. |

| ![]() I used belly bands for Max before he passed. He was on meds for CHF and he peed a lot. So, it was a bit messy. However, I think Lady Jane said that she uses adult incontinence pads instead of maxi pads and they absorb better. Mind you, I was gone for 8 hours at a time. So he had to wear them all day. I am using belly bands for Willie for marking. I just use maxis for him and they are barely damp when I take them off. I used diapers on Anna and they came right off.

| ![]() I use belly bands for Boomer at times because I can't trust him to always pee on the pad. They are great. I also tried diapers and it was just a mess. At first I wasn't sure what pad to use but found that the Ultra Absorbant pads work the best. I just had to make sure to place Boomer's penis in the center of the pad otherwise the pee will go through the edges. He will sometimes still go to the pad in it and try to pee. The website below is the one I used before and really like their designs The Official BellyBands.net Website!!!

| ![]() I've used them on fosters who would not quit marking. Definitely shave the belly area clean. It will attract pee and cause urine burns. You'll want to have a few to change out and wash often if there's any leakage. Wipe belly area clean too. I would use an incontinence pad- I used regular feminine pads because I had them around and they weren't quite absorbent enough.

| ![]() I use a belly band on my Riley & a diaper cover on my Lexi as neither can be trusted enough. I use the new Poise Thin-shape pads (turquoise pkg. rather than the pink as they are much thinner but absorb as well), regular length, a no. 5 maximum absorbency. I cut the pads in 4 pieces for Riley (3.5#) & in 2 pieces for Lexi (6#). I use paper tape on the raw edges. I prefer the belly band over a diaper as they fit better & less area is covered on the furbaby. I make sure their tummies are shaved down. I use sensitive baby wipes on them. I have never had either get irritated skin thankfully. I purchased a set of 4 really cute printed belly bands on ebay at a very reasonable price. I have some diaper covers I purchased at Petsmart. I also bought on ebay some really cute printed diaper covers with suspenders (reminescent of a baby sunsuit). These fit my little girl like they were made for her. I think they are more comfortable for her as well. They were less expensive than the Petsmart covers.

| ![]() Not that this is directly related, but I keep baby wipes (unscented) around to clean Kaji's Mr Peepers. I've been using them since his belly band days, and yes, the hair on his belly was kept nice and short to help with cleanliness as well. If you can, give him a breather when you clean him up. It's just nice to give their skin an opportunity to breathe every once in a while.
