YT 3000 Club Member | ![]() I have a question, Chester is almost 14 and Im wondering about his yearly vaccine which is due in a few weeks. My vet said no due to his age, but my concern is I travel with him a lot. Im wondering about doing the titer which is 150.00 or should I just do the vaccine. I also took him in a few weeks ago because he was drinking more water then usual. I took him in for a complete blood work and all was good except his bun was 30 which is a little high but everything else was good. I have him on acana grain free which is 27% protein and he gets wet food as well. I would appreciate any and all thoughts on this. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() The true DOI (duration of immunity) is really 7yrs to a lifetime. So if he's had it in the last 7 years, then no, I would not get it. Your vet is correct, and your vet is VERY current w/ the real DOI's on vaccines too, which is impressive. After age 7-ish, my dogs only get the law-required rabies, and that's it.

| ![]() I would change vets immediately this vaccine is not needed yearly but every three years and vets who are doing it yearly are either not following the new study's and vaccine protocols or are doing it for money.

![]() You do not need to get a distemper/parvo vaccine for the rest of his life. No, you do not need a titer at all. ![]()

YT 3000 Club Member | ![]() the only reason I have been getting it yearly is because of the traveling that I do, my vet isn't in it for the money, he hasn't been pushing me to do so at all. He is a very down to earth vet that I wouldn't change for the world. I appreciate the opinions, it is appreciated. Chester turns 14 on the 24th, he is my love. |

| ![]() I think recent studies have shown though that it is not required yearly because the vaccine's effects lasts three years. By giving it yearly, it's kind of an overdose and not required even if you're travelling. Despite what a good vet yours may seem to be, why not get a second opinion on the vaccine issue if you're still concerned? But there are definitely articles out there that have proved that these vaccines are not required annually.

My Vet gives Non core Vac's ( routine parvo distemper) every 3 yrs, and the city I live requires Rabies Vac every 3 yrs.

To the OP - PLEASE stop overvaccinating this dog. There is no scientific reason, whatsoever, to overvaccinate. Yet there are many, many health problems that studies indicate are likely related to the vast overvaccinating that went on for so long w/ our poor pets...before the newer AAHA guidelines were released *several* years ago now.
