I just adopted two 8 month old yorkie/maltese mixes 4 weeks ago. They were a bonded pair and very shy and scared of humans, so they wanted them to be adopted together. They were not abused, but they had been neglected. They have come so far since we got them and they are so smart. They came already knowing how to use potty pads and go outside to do their business. They will come running when we call their name or whistle for them. They tell us they are hungry by nibbling on our fingers. They just learned to use the doggie steps to get on and off the bed. I feel so blessed to have them. They are still nervous to be picked up but they have come so far. I love watching them learn what it feels like to have humans who love them like crazy. No health problems that our vet could find.

If you do not have unrealistic expectations, you should be fine. Pups from rescues rarely come with a clean background. Not all, but quite a few have minor to serious issues. You need to be honest with yourself if you are able to deal with potential rescue pup behaviour. Just to name a few you may run into:

1. Seperation anxiety
2. Past abuse issues.
3. No, bad or negative training from their past.
4. Nipping or outright biting, usually from fear.
5. Bad/no housetrainning habits
6. Resource guarding/hording

Before you pick up a rescue ask yourself these: Am I willing to make a life-long commitment, regardless of how my dog turns out to be (rare exceptions of course)? Am I willing to help this dog integrate into my life and family no matter what behaviours present (baring the rare exceptions)? Can you handle training the dog yourself, or can you afford a trainer should one be needed?

Rescues can be amazing additions to a family, but they can have issues that need to be addressed and overcome. Not everyone is suited to rehoming rescues, even though they may make great puupy/dog parents. Personally, I feel truly blessed to have my two amazing "little men" in my life now!!

I also rescued a bonded pair of yorkies. The best decision I ever did. Mine weren't shy and took to me right away. Enjoy your babies. I am sure they will bring you lots of joy

Thank you! They have already brought so much joy! It is so sweet to see them trotting along side-by-side, running, playing and sleeping together. They always curl up together to sleep. Tina almost always has one or two legs over Toby so she knows he's there. They both love to have their head or entire body snuggled up to my arm. We feel so blessed to have them. I know they will be even more trusting as time goes on.

My Zippy was advertised at petfinder as a yorkie, a rescue from Idaho sold in Western Washington.... He looks like he's part yorkie, maybe! LOL We love him bunches! He did come with some baggage.... apprehensive attitude would probably be the best single word for his baggage, and, initially, he didn't play at all, so, not bad... Thanksgiving marks us at two years with him.... He's super happy, plays lots with two of our other dogs but still doesn't play much with his people... He's great to take on walks here and in the mountains while camping or hunting edible mushrooms. There was the one day during off leash training that he bolted and skedaddled for home without me. It was about a mile back to the house, he was waiting on the porch when I arrived. Other than that one time, he's been the perfect off-leash dog. I think he was house broke in a matter of days.

Yes, long thin body. She is very cat-like in her body structure. The pup you found is adorable!

yep, cat or more a weasel/ferret like body... mine even sounds like a cat sometimes.

5 lbs now, put on a lot of weight since I found her....

Thank you! I can see where you got the "Lhasa" from with the floppy ears. I can also see a Maltese look in her little face. With her being so tiny, I would almost suspect Maltese rather than Lhasa. But I'm just guessing.

I was looking at that while you posted.. the weight.. along her back, she's a little darker now, all creamy colored in May. Looks like the weight puts her closer to a maltese mix though.

The last few days, I've been telling Robyn she's like one of those dessert cups, vanilla ice cream and orange sherbert swirl. She's like a cup of joy, Zippy is a whole bucket since he's 15 lbs. I'm curious what she is breed wise, but just like Zippy, it doesn't matter too much.

That's cute, vanilla ice cream and orange sherbert swirl (my favorite ice cream, by the way). My two are from the same litter but they look so different. Tina has thin, coarse white hair and Toby has thick black soft hair. I know what you mean that it doesn't matter what they are, you love them just the way they are.

I got my furbaby from a family that was going to take to shelter at 8 wks old., today she is 1 year and 8 months; weighs 4.6 lbs and is doing good other than requiring surgery on her hind legs for luxating patella aka floating knee cap. Good luck on your search.

Thanks for all the input. I've been searching for a few weeks now with very limited success. In my area at least, all the yorkies (and maltese, I expanded my search) seem to be adopted fast, what few there are. Pit bulls and chihuahuas up the wazoo, yuck.

Thanks for the info on United Yorkie Rescue, but there is nothing in Nevada (and hasn't been).

Seems like Nevada is Yorkie starved!
