| New Yorkie parents here and need advice!! Hey everyone! So just last Friday night we got a new baby boy Harley. He was only 7 and a half weeks, but the gentlemen we took him from has no power/no water in his house due to the cold weather from a few weekends ago (New England weather). He has been mostly fun so far, but I just wanted to post and see if I'm doing the right things and have the right mindset about a few things. First, we gated off an L section of our spare bedroom for him with puppy pads covering the floor. His crate is in there with blankets and toys. He seems to be enjoying his area. Feeding: Me and my girlfriend both work m-f 9-5 type jobs, so we have been feeding him a half a can of wet food at 5am, another quarter or so right before she leaves for work (usually around 830) and a half can when i get home around 5. We kept the same brand of food his previous owner was feeding him so he wouldn't have to adjust to so much so quickly. Do you guys think that this is okay for him? Biting: He LOVES to play... from the minute we let him out for the night time play session to when we have to put him back in his gate b.c he starts to pee in the living room he loves to play. But he is biting often. Mostly nibbling i guess as he hasnt really gotten me hard yet but he did get my girlfriend good once. I know this is mostly b.c he is young and we are being very patient and not yelling at him and we are doing the "yelping" thing as his brothers/sisters/mother would have done. Not working just yet, but again, we've only had him for 4 days. Potty: This is where I am wondering if theres something more or different we can do. Like i said his pen is covered with pads so when he is in there he can go anywhere and we praise him and give him a soft treat. But almost literally every time he comes out to the living room with us he will start to pee on the carpet. when he does this we pick him up right away and bring him to the pen and point at where we want him to start to go all the time and repeat "potty". Doesnt seem to get it lol. Very seldom does he "go" when I am in there trying to get him to finish so i can bring him back out. Ive already made the mistake of thinking "well he just doesnt have to go" and bringing him back out to play. ' Sorry for the long post... lol First time parents..... |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT . So glad you found us! As you probably know, this puppy should still be with its Momma until at least 12 weeks old -- some very important stuff goes on during that development time that your pup will now miss out on. Also, his young age makes him VERY vulnerable - so please keep a very, very close eye on him and if anything in the least goes wrong - get to a vet ASAP. As far as feeding, this pup needs a mid day feeding at this age. He should be eating about 4x a day right now, then down to 3x a day around 16 weeks or so. For training, follow this link to the Training section and see the Sticky Threads that cover potty training here: General Training Questions - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community

| Welcome! He is awful young to be potty trained and not have accidents; however, I think you are doing the right thing with the pen. That's what we did with our baby. We simply told (and still tell when he gets excited sometimes) Zeusy no bite (very firmly). It seems to have worked pretty well. We got our baby at 11 1/2 weeks, and the vet told us to free feed him until 16 weeks old for fear of hypoglycemia. Our snobby baby wouldn't and won't eat canned food (he is very persnickety about smells) as he hates the smell. Turns his nose and walks away; so, he eats dry kibble. Good luck with your new baby and enjoy, because it goes by so fast. My baby is now 16 months old and has full reign of our house while we work. Seems like yesterday we were dealing with the same things you are. |

| Welcome to YT!! You'll find a ton of very useful and resourceful information here for your yorkiebaby Make sure you read through the 'stickies' (first few posts on each forum page), especially in the general training forum. I can't comment on the potty training of such a young pup because we got Scottie when he was a few months old. But I do know, as it's been recommended already, that a puppy that young needs to be fed more often. At such a young age, free-feeding would be a good idea. He's growing and needs lots of fuel and nutrition!

| Thanks for the replies guys. Our plan was to free feed him, but as of right now whenever we feed him he eats it so fast... so we didnt want him to have too much food. im sure he's only eating that fast because hes hungry... but we both work m-f jobs 9-5 about a half hour from home so a mid-day feeding is very very difficult for us. we have our first vet appointment tomorrow night (thank god! a million questions lol) but is his health at risk if we continue on this feeding schedule? and we are just going to have to be patient with the potty training.. we know hes still very young. 8 weeks today. |

| There are automatic feeders. They may be advertised for cats, but a door opens at whatever time you set it. I use one when I work late and Cali wants to eat early in the morning.

| I am a newbie also. I've always had poodles and this is my first Yorkie mix. While some may consider her a mutt, I happen to love her very much and don't care if she's called a mutt or a Yorkiepoo. I'm here to learn more about the Yorkie breed. I welcome any and all suggestions. |

| yorkiemini, yeah i looked into those. Do those work for a dry/wet food mix? We went to the vet for the first time last night and Harley did so good! When she was about to give him his distemper shot, she says "he probably will NOT like this one bit" so she sticks him and he didnt whimper or cry a bit! lol it was like a proud father moment (we have no children yet). But she also said our feeding schedule is fine seeing that his weight is perfect for his age. |
