Default Looking for advice

I have been waiting for a little boy to bring into the home with my girl Roxie. I was trying to wait for a little one from Deb Sillers but she hasn't had luck with any smaller boys ib the last year. I could tell I was missing the window that a new pup would be accepted by Roxie without a ton of drama so I started looking at puppies around my area.

I found an add for an AKC boy for 1000, Mom and dad both owned by family who has less than one litter per year. Both registered AKC and Dad has been DNA tested. The little fella was beautiful so I went to see him. The little fella was just a beautiful as the pictures but when I got a closer look- he has scabs from his litter mates picking on him, he had a terrible ear mite infection, and he was woefully thin- even for his small size. and she was feeding him adult kibble that was huge! Too big for him to get into his mouth and chew. Plus he was FILTHY. I couldn't stand it. I know I shouldn't have but I just felt like I could rescue that little boy from some terrible conditions. SO I brought him home.He was bathed and given treatment for ear mites ( and will be getting continued treatment until they are gone for good) The vet said other than being too thin ( which has been addressed with putting him on Royal Canin puppy kibble and lots of chicken treats) he seems to be in great health.

The advice I am seeking is.. I have the AKC info for the lady who bred Chewie ( my new little guy) and would like to report the condition this pup was in to them. Would it do any good? Is there any recourse I can take to do something? It just bothers the hell out of me that the sweet momma and 2 frenchies she is also breeding are still there in that filthy place being given minimal care. ( the daddy is her sons dog so I didn't see him)

The second advise I'd like is .. He already seems to be a normal healthy pudgy pup after good feeding for the last week. His energy levels are back where a healthy puppy should be and he is a bundle of energy. He was 10 weeks old when I got him. How much damage could have been done between the time he was weaned and when I got him due to malnutrition? And is there any kind of supplement I can give him to help him develop the muscle tone he should have and lso the build up him immune system?

Appreciation in advance for any thoughts.

First, thanks for providing a good home a little fellow in need.

I would think the vet would have a good idea where to report the dismal conditions to. Give them a call for the local number to begin an inquiry.

I presume the vet did a regular check up as well, IE checking for parasites, murmurs, sarcoptic and demodex mange, etc....

If all check out well, you may want to invest in pet insurance since many yorkies from poor breeders have long term health issues.

I'm sorry this poor little guy came to you in this condition , poor thing; glad he is with YOU though. And yep, there are probably many others who have suffered at the hands of those people - so I commend you for wanting to do something about it.

I'd report them to AKC, the local Humane Ass'n., the USDA (in case they are a USDA breeder), and your local city's shelter as well.

As far as health -- yeah, I'd be concerned too. There is a ton of development that takes place during those first several months and especially weeks of a pup's life. Not much you can do about invisible potential damage at this point, other than support him w/ good nutrition and do NOT overvaccinate in any way, shape, or form.

I also do believe that when a puppy suffers at a young age from something (giardia, malnutrition, some disease, bronchitis, kennel cough, whatever....), that there is a much bigger chance of later allergies setting in (enviro allergies...ie, dust, grass, pollens etc). So if this were me, I'd personally be staying away from the more typical allergens for canines like grains and such. I'd be feeding grain free for life.

If you do want to supplement him, it can't hurt. I like Natures Farmacy supplements and they make some really nice general supps.

Unfortunately, there are building blocks that have not been used in this baby's nutritious aspects....you have him on RC and that is a great choice for this baby....keep him on the puppy food to make up for the ground he has already lost.....hopefully, he will catch up since you intervened and have him eating healthy puppy food now. His breeding has more of an impact on what is going on with internal organs, muscles, tendons, joints, etc.....praying her breeding program is substantially better than her kennel maintenance....or the condition of her dogs..... I do not think any additional supplements are necessary, since he is on a great puppy food....but if you wanted to give supplements, I give my seniors a dose of Dinovite in their food....just to be sure I have my bases covered! I give sardines/kippers once a week....the fish oil is great for them......this would work for youngsters as well, in much smaller quantities, or you will end up with diarrhea. That RC puppy food is all I ever use on my babies....and they have never had health issues from poor diet!

Thanks for all the advice and support!

the vet said unless she is breeding regularly, which she is not, there isn't much I can do. Unfortunately, being filthy doesn't count as "Abuse". Neither does ear mites or other non life threatening problems from being dirty. She was feeding the dogs regularly, and not giving them the proper kibble also isn't anything animal groups will interfere with and they were inside her home so minimal care is being tendered. The most I can do is write to AKC and, should she ever attempt to expand her breeding, or to get a breeder of merit, that stain in her record will most likely stop it.

Regarding the little guy, he seems to be a happy puppy now though I still haven't been able to get his stool to a firm consistency. I have been giving him a little canned pumpkin with his kibble and that has helped a bit..but only to the point that he doesn't have the runs anymore.

WyliesMom... Never thought about the vaccinations. I did have a complete panel run and he is free of Guardia, etc...he was supposed to receive his first round of shots between 6 and 8 weeks - but she didn't give him his 1st until 9 weeks. So we are a little behind on the shots But, based on what you said, that might be good thing. It's tough tho- I want to take him for walks when I walk Roxie but can't until he has all his shots and I know his immune system is strong. I also want to have him fixed and we are running a little behind with the shots so timing his shots and rabies vaccinations with fixing him before 6 months is going to be close. ( I actually would like to have him fixed at 5 months is possible, but the vet is allowing 3 weeks instead of two between shots to give the little guy a break. I just wish I could figure out why his stool is still so soft. Is that normal? We changed him to Royal Canin last sat- so it's been 8 days.

On the good side..this little sweetie can sleep for 6 or more hours at a stretch! So I am loving that. If we go to bed around 10pm- he will get me up once in the night. So we get to sleep! Feel that love! He is also getting used to his time in the playpen without crying to be let out. He's such a sweetie wit a feisty little attitude. I am glad I got him. And I only hope that bad nutrition between weaning and when I got him at 10 weeks doesn't impact him negatively.

I am just reading all this now. Although you paid for this wee lil puppy it was a rescue. I would have done the same thing, get him out of there and get him medical care and good quality food. Bless you, how is little Chewy doing. I am sure all that gave you advise are also interested as well.

There are two things I would like to emphasize 1) Get pet health insurance - covering genetic defects it just might be the wisest choice you will make.

2) get your puppy fully well and healthy before even considering neutering and a good time after all regular including Rabies shots are done. There is no rush to neuter if you do not have an intact female in the home.

Thank all of you for your kind thoughts and advice. We ended up naming him Rascal... chewie didn't seem to fit and he wouldn't answer to it. LOL

He finally got s firm stool, and he is eating like a horse. When we got him chartwise he looked like he would be about 2.5 lbs grown. Now, for the last 3 weeks he has solidly been charting at 4 maybe 4.25 lbs grown. His muscle tone has more then doubles and the vet has given him a clean bill of health. His patellas look great and his bile panel also looks great. He trusts us now and is starting to cuddle with us. But he still cowers down at any loud voice or noise like he expects to be hit. SO I am working with him tp learn no one will ever hit him. He is even starting to come, sit, down and stay, And oh PRAISE GOD.. he FINLLY got that going one or 2 on the PAD gets treats! LOL
