Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Good article. Although this sentence doesn't make any sense: "A Teacup Yorkie isn't an officially recognized by the AKC. It is simply too small to be a true Yorkshire Terrier." Doesn't make sense bc ANY yorkie under 7 lbs is considered a true "Yorkshire Terrier", period.

It is true and if you have a teacup Yorkie, most likely he/she will have health issues due to the smallness. I know someone whose teacup fell off the couch and died. A friend of mine did show Yorkies and this is the standards of the AKC and where they regulate the size and so many things in order to qualify with the AKC to show.

A true Yorkshire Terrier is any Yorkshire Terrier that is a purebred Yorkshire Terrier regardless of size. There are lots of purebred Yorkshire Terriers that do not fit the "Yorkshire Terrier Standard." The Yorkshire Terrier Standard represents the ideal Yorkshire Terrier and what good breeders are hoping to achieve. That is why they are so selective in their breeding pairs. At least this is my understanding.

AKC recognises and registers purebred Yorkshire Terriers from AKC registered Yorkshire Terrier parents regardless of size but they will be disqualified from an AKC sauctioned show if they do not fall within the size standard. That doesn't mean they are not TRUE Yorkshire Terriers. Last edited by Parti Peanut; 10-25-2015 at 11:40 AM.

This is NOT accurate....."true yorkshire terriers" can weigh ANY weight...whether they are accepted in the show ring is not even part of the equation of what defines "a true yorkshire terrier". ANY breeder of show stopping yorkies, has had throwbacks and produced a tiny in occasional litters....how they handle those tinies is their own preference....they can not be shown as they are way off what is recommended as an acceptable weight for a yorkie, females certainly can not be bred and NO respected, knowledgeable breeder would even go there....I just happen to keep the few tinys I have produced because very few people are equipped to take care of them. But, they are absolutely purebred yorkies!!! Their tiny size is not what qualifies/disqualifies what the breed is! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 10-25-2015 at 01:26 PM.

Originally, my friend who shows posted this on Facebook. I learned about teacups from her and her other show friends. They told me that when there is a runt of the litter, they have bred other runts and that is the reason for the name cause they can fit into a teacup. I have seen Yorkies 12-15 pound and couldn't believe that they were true and full-blooded Yorkies. They were small and weren't suppose to get as big as they did she told me. I think all Yorkies are cute no matter the size
