| How To Safely Cut Black Nails Trying to cut black nails is hard since you can't really see the quick. A friend who used to be a groomer verbally explained what to look for but I'm more of a visual person. I found this online and thought it would be helpful for those that's trying to cut their furbutt(s) nails at home. http://www.lacotaoverton.com/wp-cont...l-clipping.jpg |

| Both of my dogs have black nails and I've never had a problem cutting then. I soften them up with a bath the. Take small slices off at a time and when you get near the quick (you actually CAN see it) you cut around it and not through it. The more often you cut their nails the farther the quick recedes making the entire process fairly easy and safe.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | This is something that I always struggle with and is something that after 13 years am still trying to find the best way to tackle. Which is why my babies nails are typically longer than they should be. I was told by my vet that as long as you see an oval shape when you cut your ok but as soon as you see a round shape that is when you need to stop. Also the more often you cut them the more the qwick will reseed. Another great trick that I use is for those nails that are not a really dark black I use a flash light to see the qwick. What a great toll . . never have any misshaps with it.

I think for Yorkies, it's mostly white when you cut it, then when you reach the black dot, you stop. Here's a good pic of what it would look like: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/IMG_5969.jpg

Yes, you can but only on those very light to light nails.

| I have two dogs who tend to grow their nails fast. I take the tips off their nails every week after their bath. I keep them short so it's easy to just clip the tips. I have it hit a bleeder yet. I just check as I cut - when I see a small black dot dot starting to appear, i know it's the quick and I stop cutting.
