| Spay question I have been looking for a buddy for Peanut. I will be going to see a little girl yorkie tomorrow that is being rehomed. She is 3 1/2 yrs old and 3.6 pounds and not spayed. I will need to get her spayed right away if I decide to bring her home with me, but I'm concerned that she is so small. I have always had my past girls (larger breeds) spayed when they were younger(under a yr). Should this be a big problem with her size and age? Peanut is not neutered. My Schnauzer girl is spayed so until now it wasn't a problem. Last edited by Parti Peanut; 07-20-2015 at 05:59 PM. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | As long as her pre-surg bloodwork checks out okay, she should be just fine . I totally understand the worry though.

| Thank you. My husband and I talked more about it last night. He is very concerned with her being so small. I have never had a dog that small and worry that she would be just so fragile. I have read several threads on here that talk about all the problems with the little ones. Although this little girl seems to be very healthy, I think it would be best for us to wait for a little girl in the 5 to 6 pound range. |

| My little Luci was 2 1/2 pounds and 4 1/2yrs old when I took her in as a re-home 3 yrs ago, and I had her spayed and all her ugly teeth were removed and she had no problem what so ever. Just make sure you get the blood work before hand. I was a nervous wreck. My Vet's also let me stay in the office during the surgery and when I knew it all over and she was starting to wake, that is when I left and came back to get her and bring her home. When I brought her home, she acted as if nothing had happened to her.

| My experience they are delicate and you have to be on your toes and keep a watch out for them. Luci at times thinks she is bigger than what she is. She does scare me at times.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Until you can get her into the vet for spaying always assume that she is in heat - and crate and rotate or a playpen or something like that. Never ever leave the two dogs alone when un attended.. Also assume the previous owner does not know what a heat looks like - get her into the vet ASAP to verify heat status. Exercise separately Many folks here do not have any issues with spaying tiny dogs - make sure your vet is up on the most recent anaesthesia protocols etc.

| I went to see the little girl and she is really little. We decided she is just too small and fragile as a buddy for Peanut. She is also in heat so even if she were bigger, it would have been a problem. At least now that I have seen what an adult 3 pounder looks like, I know that is just too small. I just hope she finds a good responsible home for her. Thanks everyone for the great advice. Last edited by Parti Peanut; 07-21-2015 at 02:47 PM. |

| Our Bella was 5 months old, 2.4 lb and going in for liver shunt surgery when she got spayed as well. They may be small, but they are tough. Yours should come through just fine.
