| Is Colby rebelling? Hello all! First off I want to thank this community for providing a depth of knowledge that I simply could not find anywhere else. And apologize, this is a long one... Colby is now just over 4 months old. By now I thank my lucky stars that my hasty decision to get a puppy from what I now know was a BYB didn't turn out horrible. Although I know that there is no way Colby can be 100% Yorkie. He looks like one but he is just to big. Already approaching 7lbs! I love him anyway. Always and forever. -But he's beginning to test our patience. He's gong backward in the potty training area. We take him out like clockwork but he's started this thing where he won't stop playing to go out. Just runs around, suddenly stops, pees, continues peeing and playing at the same time. Making a mess of the carpet. Trails of pee all over the place!!!! Anyone else encounter this? He also refuses to eat, almost everything. He was eating a mixture of Wellness Small Breed Puppy and two spoonfuls of wet food three times per day. Slowly over the past couple of weeks he's gotten to where he'll look at his food. Smell it, look at me like i'm crazy and go running off. Free feeding him is not an option. We have an overweight Cocker Spaniel that will eat all of his food and more if we let her. Getting him to eat is becoming a nightmare. I know he needs to eat but I don't know what to do. I've tried different wet, he'll take a bite or two and stop eating. Sprinkling Parmesan cheese on it, works for 2 days then he was over it. I found a canned, no byproduct good food and he seems to like but he sucks it off the kibble and walks away. This morning I just gave in and fed him just the new wet. 4 bites. That was it. Mind you HE LOVES THE ADULT DOG FOOD. But only when he can steal it from the big dog. Feed it to him by himself and he wants nothing to do with it. He's got plenty of energy. Zipping around terrorizing the 2 year old cocker spaniel with his endless playing. His mood seems the same. Just add peeing everywhere when he hardly never had an accident and refusing to eat. Is this some sort of "terrible two" stage of puppydom that I am not aware of? I'm going nuts!! |

| Have you had Colby checked for a UTI? He might have one if he is peeing all over the place while playing. If not, he might be backstepping for a bit. A lot of puppies do that. You will just have to start training him over again. My puppies also went through a stage where they decided they didn't like the food I was feeding them. The lady at the pet store told me her yorkie does that on a regular basis, where they decide they no longer want what they are being fed and you have to find a new food for them. Our 8 month old is on his 3rd food already. When he stops eating his food, the 6 month old stops eating her food because she wants whatever her brother has. Please don't think that your puppy might not be a purebred yorkie just because he weighs 7 lbs. already. There are many 'teapot' yorkies out there. In fact, my puppy is one. He is 8 months old and weighs 11 lbs. I just think there is more yorkie to love and snuggle with

| Waffles was very picky as a puppy and one thing that helped, is we went from feeding 3 meals a day to 2 meals, one in the morning and one in the early evening. We would give him a few kibbles as a small snack midday. He's big - 13 lbs now (purebred by the way), so he was fine on 2 meals. Also, we primarily feed wet canned food, and he gets kibbles as more of a treat/snack. Stella and Chewy's freeze dried food worked well as a little topper to get him to eat. |

| What you describe with Colby peeing while playing etc, sounds alot like Sunni recently. She did have a UTI, and with medication she's all cleared up now and back to normal. I dont have a problem with my little teapot eating, lol. She enjoys her breakfast and dinner. I do leave kibble out all day, but she just nibbles on that once in a while. For her meals, I add a few spoons of homecooked, or canned..depending on how tired I am, lol. She's not a bit fat..also probably from a mill or byb, but she's a bundle of love. I wouldn't change a hair on her little (big) body. She's 11.2 lbs I feel just like Wigglewomyn...just more to snuggle and cuddle with..and I dont have to worry about stepping on her anymore....she doesn't walk, she zooms, lol..zoom zoom..her comes Sunni!! |

| Well as of 4:00 pm all I had gotten Colby to eat was about 4/5 bites of food. Went to the store and get the Fresh Brand of Food. It was on the Dog food isle but in a cooler. Spendy as well. I felt this was a FOR SURE way to get him to eat. 12 bucks for 3lbs of food, Better quality than what I eat. Get home. Opened the package and oh my it smells delicious. He's going crazy smelling and all excited. He sat up (sit piddy) begged. I gave him a piece and he scarfed it down. Put some in his dish. The little stinker mouthed a few pieces spit them out and walked away. He ended up eating about 1/2 cup but I had to hand feed him. This is getting ridiculous. I've never known a god that was this picky as a puppy. I've known adult dogs who where picky but that was mostly their owners fault/creation. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If a dog suddenly starts peeing oddly and never did before, he really needs to see a vet for a potential issue like a UTI, which can be incredibly painful. Is he neutered? If so, did this start to happen after the neuter, which would indicate something going wrong there possibly? As far as food...it sounds like you've tried all the tricks...and that he's still winning . I don't have any helpful add'l suggestions, other than to rotate foods to keep him interested...?

| Under 5 months old is still very young. Puppies do test patience. I had to hand feed Max his entire first year. He chose to perform sits for each piece of kibble. I sped up the process of meals by playing "Kibble in the Kong." I put several pieces of kibble in Kong, sang a little song, and this got him excited to eat out of the toy Kong. Regarding the peeing -- if not a UTI, maybe: Sounds like Colby has devised his own little game when it comes to potty trips. Do you have a fenced yard for potty trips or does he have to put on his harness and walk on a leash? I ask because I wonder if he is just avoiding the process, or enjoys being chased to get him to go outside. Max likes to play hard to get when it is time to go out, although he is extra excited about going. He just wants everything on his terms, and loves to be chased. Maintain a calm demeanor. Do not show frustration. Does Colby like to follow you? With Max, I simply announce that I am leaving or going outside, then I move in that direction, and then he is eager to put on his harness and get going.

| When Sakura was a puppy she went on a food strike. I would be on the floor forever trying to get her to eat a few kibbles. She would throw up she was so hungry but wouldn't eat. Vet said just leave it out but still she turned up her nose. I tried several different kinds of dog foods, putting wet food on her kibble, or adding a little water to it. Nothing worked til I not only changed her food bowl from a dog bowl to a porcelain rice bowl and changed it to where she gets kibble at night and wet food in the morning. I get many different flavors of the wet food so it's a new flavor every couple of days. Last edited by Zanny; 06-12-2015 at 06:37 AM. |

| When I complained to the vet that Zoey didn't like her food and I kept trying different ones he told me that she had me trained. No dog has ever committed suicide by not eating - they will eat garbage. I would suggest feeding raw food. My dogs went crazy for it and never turned up their nose at the bowl. Unfortunately, Zoey has pancreatatis problems and has to eat rx food now.
