| 200 strains worldwide and vaccine covers 4 strains. Still a scary illness poorly protected by current vaccination that has a potential huge downside.

| More food for thought, an article about Lepto, including vaccine, from the MSPCA Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, a renowed 24-Hr hospital seeing 65,000 patients a year. Note where it says this (and why I don't vaccinate). "Vaccination against Leptospira is only available for the serovars canicola, grippotyphosa, pomona and icterohaemorragiae. Most recent outbreaks of the disease involve serovars for which vaccination does not exist." Leptospirosis: What is it, and how can I protect my dog?

| For me I don't give that Vac. My late Lizzie when she was a about 6 months old got that Vac and I almost lost her due to the horrible reaction that she had. Ever since then none of mine get it.

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I don't give extra vaccinations to dogs under one year old. The core vaccines yes. So no way would I give a 4mth old pup a lepto shot - but again specific questions need to be asked of the vet about incidence rate - the servovars in your area etc. But I do give Lepto vaccine to my adult crew. It is in our area - and as we hike and our fav activity is swimming - and I have two nose dogs - they get it! I know that they are only somewhat protected. I also know we don't have the servovar info at least in a relatively current state as to what is going in SW Ontario. But is a decision that needs to be tailored to your dog and your locale.

Yes, Teddy didn't have his shot until he was a year old during his annual check up. Good point. | |

| GabyM thanks for sharing. Anaphylactic shock is rare but as I stated above I'm not willing to vaccinate given my dogs' lifestyles and the fact that the vaccine just doesn't cover all the noted strains.

| after talking to fellow Yters and researching online, i decided to not give kupo lepto shots.. but since we are in military family and other states require it, like hawaii, where my family is.. we decided to give it to him anyways... he did fine though. no reactions at all |
