| Need Help! We love our Zeus (as the name indicates). He is 7 months old now. We were thinking of getting a second Yorkie. Since he is our first pet, we are unsure about a couple of things. How old is too old to bring another puppy into the house (for Zeus, I mean)? Also, is it better to have two boys or a boy and a girl. Zeus has been neutered and, of course, we would get the new puppy spayed or neutered. Zeus has a very docile personality and gets his feelings hurt easily -- just a little info on him if that helps. Thanks! |

| Max entered our lives first and Sasha joined us when Max was about 10 months old. I don't think the gender mixture makes a difference myself. In our circumstance ( we both work) getting Max a little sister was the best thing we did for him.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Lots of different opinions on this. I got another dog when Joey was around 7, not a puppy though, an adult, and it took Joey about a year to warm up to him, I think he would have warmed up to a puppy right away because he did with my son's puppies. If you goal is to provide a playmate for Zeus, getting another dog now is a good idea, I think the older dogs can even help a puppy become potty trained, which can be a real plus! However, the older dog might have some setbacks. Basically, Zeus is still a puppy, so I think you can get either sex and they will get along well. If I had a girl, I would get a boy, if you have a boy, you can get either, girls seem to have more of a problem getting along than boys do. Try to find a good breeder and tell them about Zeus, they might be able to help you choose a puppy with the right temperament, that will bring out the best in Zeus.

| Thank you. Thank you, both. Yes, it would be because both me and my husband work. Our 14 year old comes home after school, but Zeus is such a sad sack being home by himself. He is happier now that he has free reign of the den, kitchen, and laundry room. My husband made him a ramp, and I think "his" sofa is where he spends most of the day when we are not at home. Also, we are so stupid crazy in love with him, we would love another, too. I was thinking another boy, because Zeus is so sweet; however, we have a chance at buying a girl from a couple. They bought the puppy, and it isn't working out with their family dynamic. Thanks again for the input. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Speak to your breeder about your dogs' doganality - sic personality. Actually personality is more important than age. I prefer two males - in my experience they tend to be more predictable in some ways to females.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | He is still so very young, that I'd bet he'd adjust wonderfully in time. I have 3 boys and 1 girl...I had 1 boy first, then added another boy, then a girl, then a boy...and they all went pretty smoothly.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yeah, but still there's only one girl to the group, try adding another girl and see if that's the case!

| I received a male yorkie puppy for Christmas and my 13 year old dachshund was just too old to play with the puppy so we bought another yorkie puppy, a female, when our male was 4 months old. It was the best thing we could have done. The two puppies play together wonderfully and are best friends. We think it is the best thing we did, to get another puppy for the first one.

| I think getting another one is absolutely going to be good for Zeus, especially since you both work (like we do). Yorkies are definitely not loners. They LOVE companionship.

| From my own experience with dogs. My boys have always been much more mellow and welcoming then the females. The male dogs also bonded to me solidly, lol (which of course I loved). My females have taken longer to warm up to the new pup in the clan...However, that is not the case currently! I have a 12 + male Shih Tzu, and a 6 month old Yorkie...She is DYING to be freinds with Harry, but he's taking longer then I expected to warm up to her. I actually currently have an application in for another rescue Yorkie and requested a female, when one becomes available. I figure I will need another queen to hold her own with Sunni...but the good news is, whatever the combo I have had, they always warm up in the end. And I definitely think they need a companion, especially if you are working. They are social little critters and when they have each other I feel less guilty when I have to leave. Progress was finally made last night...after about 4 months...Harry let Sunni cuddle up with him when they were napping She tried again at bed time, but that was a fail, haha...progress not perfection. |

YT 1000 Club Member | My personal experience with dogs is one female and however many males I happen to have. I currently have a 4 year old male english setter who is very mellow and laid back. I have a 9 year old Yorkie who is also very mellow. Getting a male and female puppy this month. Will only be 1 female and I bet she rules the house in no time. I don't even know which of my current males is top dog because neither one tries to be. I am alpha female and my husband is alpha male and all they know is that they are below him and otherwise they just co-exist well together. The yorkie is a bit afraid of playing with the setter, although the yorkie has tried a couple times. I hope he will play with the puppies when they arrive. I say go for it and get another puppy and either gender should work out well, but if you get a girl now I would only add males to your household, even fixed I have had trouble when I had 2 females. Usually I have one of each, but the Yorkie was a surprise and it has worked out great.
