| Separation Anxiety My yorkie is 7 and fully trained. Since my 'old' dog died, we've been having troubles. If he is left alone, will full reign of the house, there is one spot in the house where he pees. If he is limited to the laundry room - linoleum floor- he pukes. If I cover the pee spot, he finds a new spot. He doesn't do any of this when we are at home. The vet has said this is classic separation anxiety and the anxiety drugs we have tried him on, actually seem to make him more agitated. Has anyone had any similar experience and what can you advise? Other than quitting my job and never leaving the house? |

| Yes, I've had similar experiences and it is not surprising that the medication you have tried hasn't been successful. I have had no less than three specialists tell me that anti-anxiety medication is not often successful in small dogs and can actually escalate issues or create non-reversible personality changes. Therefore, these three specialists (from different practices) refused to prescribe any anxiety meds for my dog. I would say that if the only thing your dog is doing is throwing up - don't worry too much. There is not a lot which can be done and as long as he's not hurting himself, you are doing the best you can do. The hardest part of this, for me, was accepting how my dog is instead of how I wanted him to be. The only other thing I can suggest is asking your vet about another dog. If this only started when your other one passed away, maybe another friend would help? I'd stress caution with this, though. You don't want 2 dogs with separation anxiety and one can't replace the other - it's just another angle to consider. Keep your chin up..x |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have you tried the pheromone sprays, collars, or plug-ins...? There are also aromatherapy calming sprays for dogs. Also, maybe a Thundershirt...?

| What do you cover the pee spot with? Something to block him using that spot, or a puppy pad?

| I cover it with a pee pad or a piece of furniture. I haven't tried the pheromone treatments. What treatments would you suggest that actually work? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You'd just have to try some of them bc what works for one dog, may not for another...so I'd just give something a try and evaluate...

YT 500 Club Member | Here's a few suggestions....leave a radio on when your'e gone so they aren't surrounded by silence. Get toys that they have to work at to keep busy. Have a trusted neighbor or friend go by while you're at work and take them for a stroll or play for a half hour so they don't feel so alone. Get another dog and give it time for them to accept each other. He's not used to being all alone. He's just lonely . good luck
