Default Separation Anxiety

My yorkie is 7 and fully trained. Since my 'old' dog died, we've been having troubles. If he is left alone, will full reign of the house, there is one spot in the house where he pees. If he is limited to the laundry room - linoleum floor- he pukes. If I cover the pee spot, he finds a new spot. He doesn't do any of this when we are at home. The vet has said this is classic separation anxiety and the anxiety drugs we have tried him on, actually seem to make him more agitated.

Has anyone had any similar experience and what can you advise? Other than quitting my job and never leaving the house?
