| Newbie Here I've always been an Aussie Terrier lady until my son moved back with his Yorkie Buddy. They stayed with us for three years and my husband ( who kind of liked dogs) fell in love with Buddy. They moved to California in December and my husband said "no more dogs! It's to hard to loose them." Two months later he asked if we could get our own Yorkie. Well being a blue haired dog lady, I couldn't resist. He, we, are now the proud parents of Buster the wonder dog and our whole family is happy again. I do have a question on the breed. I've heard they're not the easiest dogs to house break and because he couldn't go out until his final shots, we decided to paper train him. Does anyone have some suggestions about retraining paper to outside pottying? You all are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks, Buster's Mom |

| Hi and congrats on the new puppy! I got mine in the middle of this very harsh winter, so even if her shots were done, I doubt I would have subjected her to trying to train outside. I put her puppy pads by the door I use to take her outside. I did get one of those trays to put the pads in. At first she wasn't interested in ripping the pads apart, but thats now a new hobby, lol. Anyway, on days it wasn't raining or too too cold I would put her coat on and let her go out on the deck. I picked it up with little baggies as I do when I walk my other dog, lol. She will use both. She will go to the pad, if I don't come running fast enough. But she will always go when outside. Once she had her shots, we started taking walks and believe it or not she was so used to do her biz on ice and snow, I had to get her used to grass and dirt!! lol |

| Congrats on the new addition to your family and welcome to YT! How old is Buster? If I remember correctly, I think it's okay for you to take them out to your back yard for potty breaks. As long as they're in a location where other dogs/animals haven't used as their pottying place. When you're ready to train him to go outside, you can move the pee pads closer to the door gradually and then put the used pad outside for him to know where to go. I'm sure others will chime in and offer many great ideas! |

| Congrats on your new puppy, Buster's mom! I bet you are loving having a yorkie in your household once again Quote:
That is where I am at right now with Duncan and Elliot. I pottytrained them during this winter on the snow and ice and they refused at first to go on the grass and dirt when the snow starting melting in most of the yard. But, if Duncan has to poop, he still won't go on the grass; he runs to the back of the yard where the snow is still two feet high and hasn't melted to go. I hope by the time that finally melts he will be used to going on the grass. Last edited by wigglewomyn; 03-31-2015 at 10:13 AM. | |

| Thanks for the welcome and reassurances. You babies pictures are adorable. As soon as I can figure out how to get my iPad pictures down in size I'll be able to add Buster's to my profile picture. |

| When I had babies first I paper trained, they were 5 months old were 100% paper trained with no accidents, then I started to house break them. I still had paper down, every morning I would feed them at 7AM, 7:30 I would walk them even if they had used the paper they still got walked, even if they didn't pee or poop outside they still got walked. This has to be consistent feed same time every day, walk same time every day even if they already used the paper. They have little built in clocks. I would get home from work at 4PM, I walked them, fed at 5PM, walked again at 5:30PM, 10PM they went curb side for their last pee-pee of the night. Consistency is the key word. By 7 months they were 100% house broken, no paper had to be left down, no accidents. Maybe I was just lucky, 4 puppies all trained this way.

| Matese? Great names. Where did you have them from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm? I'm home, and he's almost 4 months. He makes it through the night but there's no water. What's a good schedule and how do you stretch the walks out as they get bigger? I guess I should try the libraries but I'm still learning how to use this site. I have to be trained too! |
