| ![]() Long story short. Last October I got a beautiful 10 week old Yorkie who quickly began to show signs of liver shunt. Pretty muched confirmed with various tests. She even had a hepatic encephalopathy episode. The breeder took her back. She then asked if I would watch her while she was out of town for 3 weeks and I said yes. It was a great 2 weeks and I was considering keeping her but then the symptoms returned. We ended up giving here back on Jan 4th. It was so painful I still cry over her. That day she was very mopey and tired. When I got to the breeder's house as soon as she saw the other 1 dogs, one being her mother, she came to life. It almost made me feel better about leaving her. I have kept in touch with the breeder and given her info to this website and a yahoo group for liver dogs, which she joined. The other day I emailed her some info and she responded that the puppy was doing well and she sometimes, she (breeder) forgets that she is a "special needs" puppy except that the other day when she got into one of her other yorkie's food and was lethargic for a day. She then goes on to say that she has to adopt her out and wanted to know if I knew anyone? I freaked out. I spent $1800 on the puppy, had her for a total of 2 months, spent $1100.00 in vet bills. She only reimbursed the $1800. And I never asked for any of the vet fees because I figured that she would need the money to take care of the puppy. Now I am heart broken that this precious little girl who has already had a rough life, who didn't ask to be born is going to possibly have to go to a new home! I am worried that she may not disclose her medical issues to whomever may adopt her. I am sick over this! Any thoughts?

| ![]() So sad, no suggestions other then to say the breeder should keep this little girl and not "adopt" her out. If breeder holds back on health issue, this pup could be shuffled around. Poor sweet lil baby.

| ![]() Do you mean she is going to sell her, or is she looking for a home that will take her, knowing she may have liver issues (which are not positively confirmed, but suspected)? A Yorkie Rescue would possibly take this pup,and get a proper diagnosis and treatment including surgery if needed, and then find the best forever home for her. That would be the best guarantee that the pup would get the vetting she needs, and have a family that would take care of her and not abandon her.

| ![]() I can understand how heartbroken you are. It must have ripped your heart out giving up your little girl and now not knowing the home she will go to. I try not to be judgmental, but breeding a dog carries with it a huge responsibility. One is to give your own pets the very healthiest, best life possible. Another is to make sure you are doing proper health testing, early socialization, and proper screening to ensure the puppies have the very healthiest, best life possible. She is responsible for the sick little girl that was born because of her. I agree with Sandy that a Yorkie rescue group who would screen forever homes carefully would be the best option for re-homing her. I am so sorry that you have gone through this. You lost far more than the money you spent trying to save her health wise. I can not imagine being in your shoes. I hope you heal from your heartbreak. |

| ![]() Michelle, I wish I could say more to comfort you. I can feel how much you love Bijou and how much you want to protect her. I remember reading your post when you were giving her back to the breeder and feeling so sad for you. I really don't remember any details, but asking you to take her back for a few weeks and then now asking you if you know of a home for her just tugs at your heart even more. She has to know that you love her and how much all of this hurts you. Hold on to the fact that you returned her to someone you thought would take care of her medical issues, the person who is responsible for her as her breeder, when you were unable to. I don't know if Bijou is a candidate, but liver shunt repairs are usually very successful. To me, that would be the honorable thing her breeder should do for Bijou. |

| ![]() My Yorkie Cricket was diagnosed with a liver shunt as a puppy. The people I got her from had just had a litter of puppies for the expierence. ( it was their first litter). The puppy I got was the one that they would have kept ( if they were going to keep one). Cricket did have surgery for her shunt. But she was diagnosed with MVD so she does eat prescription food. I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you. I would be heartbroken as well if I had to return my dog.

My biggest worry about Bijou was that she had symptoms practically every day. She had HE symptoms twice within 6 weeks.

| ![]() She is doing great! However Her bile acid numbers never returned to normal, so she was diagnosed with MVD, she is playful and happy though. She just eats prescription food. I think there was ONE time with Cricket when she had BAD HE symptoms.
