| Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I know you have been tons of advice already....I only want to add that you should try one thing at a time and see if it helps if not then try something else...don't change everything at once or you won't really know what helped and what didn't!! And I agree stay away from Science Diet it is full of corn and by products...talk to someone at Petco or Petsmart and they can help you find the right food for you!!

| I swear by Missing Link. Someone on here recomended it when Syd was young and we have used it ever since. She used to have dry flaking skin and it cleared that right up and improved her coat. A friend of mine...who has a Lab...had an itchy allergy problem for awhile and her vet recomeded some vitamins to give her dog. Those worked for her. I don't know what they were...but I could find out for you if you want me to. |

| God never did I think it could possibly be the cleaning solution that use on my tile, what I use is also Pinesol. Could it be that? Believe me in the seventh months that I've had my baby girl I have taken to the vet problably about 7-8 times because of this and nothing that they give her seems to work. Like I mentioned on my original thread the last option the vet gave was taking a skin graph, and I really don't want princess to go threw that at such a young age.

| Early this evening I made a stop at petsmart, I got her Royal Canin for yorkies. I got home and gave her just a little mixed in with her food she's feeding on now, what she did she ate all the Royal Canin bits like their was no tomorrow. I was reading the Science diet package of it's engridients and it did not sound so good I'm crossing my fingers I hope she can stick to this new brand

| This is an excerpt from a book called "Veteranary Secrets Revealed" hope it helps. The Skin The skin is the largest organ of your pets body and reflective of what is going on in the body. Regularly brush your pet looking for fleas, lice or ticks. The hair coat should be soft and shiny. If you are seeing areas of hair loss in your pet then you may be dealing with certain skin conditions such as mange, ringworm, hypothyroid disease or allergies; treatments for these are discussed in detail in the ebook. If your pet has areas of hair loss around the face that are not itchy, then he may have a type of mange called demodex. This small parasite shows up in pets with depressed immune systems. One very safe effective treatment is Vitamin E given at 400IU per 40lbs once daily for 3-4 weeks. If your pet has an excess of flaky skin (dandruff), then she may be in need of a essential fatty acid supplement. Flax is the best source for dogs at a dose of 1 teaspoon per cup of dog food. For cats use the liquid supplement (such as fish oil). Take note of any palpable lumps or bumps. Lipomas (benign fatty tumors) commonly occur on the chest wall. If your dog has a soft moveable lump on her chest, then it is probably a fatty tumor. Sebaceaous cysts are another common lump; they can often be distinguished by squeezing out a cheesy substance. They are also very soft. Lumps and bumps become more prevalent as your pet ages and their immune system weakens. The most important thing in helping your pet is having them on a premium quality diet and supplementing with additional antioxidants. The ones I suggest using are Vitamin E and Vitamin C and specific flavanoids. Any lumps that are firm, rapidly growing, not easily moveable should be considered serious and examined by your veterinarian. Allergies are one of the most common reasons that I see pets. There are a huge number of allergens. The 3 main classes are, Food, Fleas and Environmental. The most common signs are excessive scratching, paw and anal licking, hair loss and excess dandruff. If you suspect that your pet has an allergy, then the first 2 things that I suggest are to eliminated external parasites as a cause, and to feed a hypo-allergenic diet for 4-6 weeks (there are many available). Some very helpful at home remedies that I often use are: TO THE BATH. An oatmeal shampoo with cool water will ease the itchiest skin. Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes then rinse well. With the most severe allergies, bathe your pet twice weekly. SOOTHE IT TOPICALLY. Calendula ointment is a herbal medication that has been successfully used to relieve the itch. Apply a thin coat twice daily to affected areas. THE SUPPLEMENT CONNECTION. Fatty Acid supplements are very helpful in decreasing the level of inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids are most important. A great, inexpensive source is ground Flax Seeds; I give 1 tsp per cup of dog food. Cats are unable to metabolize Flax, so I only recommend the liquid supplement for them. Other sources include fish oil, primrose oil and specific veterinary supplements. |

| It's probably pretty hard to digest all the info. Science Diet is a dog food that lots of vets sell right here in their practice waiting room so people get the idea it's the best and it is not. The only info I would check out before you use is oil. Oil is the most drying thing you can do for a dogs skin. Sounds like it might be good but it really is not. I would bet the food is the main problem and you have changed that gradually. If that food doesn't help there are many other wonderful foods you can try but do check the recipe and remember the first ingredient makes up the largest part of the recipe.Good Luck and don't forget to ask for help anytime. The best advise here was the person who said do one thing at a time so you really know what the problem is......also if you trust your vet you have to listen to him, some of this problems take a while to clear up.
