| Lepto vaccine?? Hello, I'm new here and a new Yorkie mom 😘 My Bella is 4 months old tomorrow. Her vet highly recommended the lepto vaccine, she did say it needed to be separated out just in case of a reaction. However, I read somewhere that it wasn't recommended for Yorkies?? I'm confused, help?? The thought of hurting my baby girl scares me to death! Thank you!! |

| Hiya, welcome to YT My Teddy had his first annual vet visit and you can follow this link to read some info re vet advice for the Lepto. He did recommend it and it was part of a booster just as Teddy had when he was 11 weeks old. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...my-others.html Hope that helps. I'm sure others can offer some more advice as this is just my experience with my dog and my vet I meant to add that I'm in England so local advice may differ!! | My vet advised waiting a little bit on this one and said it is one to think about and make a personal decision. Is it common in your area there? My vet said for any dog that is going to have access to puddles, ponds, etc that it is a must (in this area of NY). For now, I am holding off (my yorkie is 19 weeks). Hopefully you get some good info on here. Last edited by lovestiny; 01-16-2015 at 07:43 AM. Reason: added in this area |

| Thank you so much for the information! That's what the vet said...common in this area. There is just so much information and I want to be informed in my decisions. I trust my/her vet but I value other Yorkie owners opinions. Again, thank you! |

| I would advise a shot of Benadryl at the vet, 20 minutes prior to the vaccination, and then hang around at the vet for an additional 20-30 minutes to see if your baby is going to have any anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine. |

I agree here, Lola had one because we live on a lake and it has been in this area. But I always have one shot done at time with the Benadryl like suggested above for all vaccinations. I also make all my vaccination appointments early in the day just in case there is a reaction I want to make sure my vet is still open.

| This was what we gathered about Lepto and puppy vaccines: The OTC vacs have a 5way and a 6way they reccomend for small breed dogs and the bordatella is seperate. The 5 and 6 do not include lepto and my understanding (dr Pete Is the vet that told me this) is that a few years ago (didn't inquire as to which year) there was a strain of lepto included in the standard vaccine route that incited many poor reactions and most especially in small dogs and that because of that the OTC market quit including lepto in their puppy shots and small breed shots. He told me though that te veterinary offices in particular, since they go through their vaccines rapidly, have the most updated versions and that they have re formulated safe lepto vaccines that are appropriate even for small dogs. Also that in our area it is wise to vaccinate for lepto. That said, when miss lilah got her baby vaccines, we did not get OTC vacs we went to our vet, we seperated them out over time and had the Benadryl injection beforehand. One of her parents had had a reaction to the bordatella vaccine and her breeder did not reccomend that she get it but of course lilah couldn't do anything without it (go to the groomers, dog parks or dog daycare) so we proceeded but with great caution under veterinary supervision. Lilah received her lepto also. Additionally they are vaccinating for corona (at least in my area) because after having that one 'fall out of favor' for some time, they decided that some cases of dog deaths that had been identified as parvo may actually have been corona or that the dog may have been treatable had thy not had the additional presence of corona. Good luck with your puppy!

| Thank you again!! Wow, what great information. The vet did suggest having Benadryl on hand but I like the idea of hanging out at the vet for awhile. And her appt is early morning so that's a good thing. |

| We no longer give lepto. It's prevalent here but I feel it's not worth it for my dogs.
