YT 500 Club Member | Whats Your Opinion So my husband feels I am medicating my dog for no reason. My husband is the type that does not like to take pills. My vet suggested I give him 1/2 of 10mg claritin for itching. On a bad day he might itch at himself 10 times if that. He has not hot spots not rash and no hair missing from it. Would you medicate a dog for that amount of itching. Thanks |

| Yes I would because the scratching can lead to a rash and lead to skin infections.

| Most definitely follow vets advise, scratching same areas 10 times a day can cause skin lacerations that may become infected, leading to more severe issues.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes, I would *absolutely* medicate my dog for this amount of itching. Also, "hot spots" is just another name for a localized pyoderma infection (staph intermedius) - so you truly want to prevent those if you can by decreasing the irritation and histamine response via using the meds. Unless hubby would prefer a widespread, full body staph infection...???

| I would definitely continue to give him what the vet prescribed. That last thing you want is for him to be scratching, break open the skin and get an infection. Plus...I'm sure you want him to be comfortable from all that itching. Besides...What do husbsnds know anyway...lol
