| A quick update for everyone. Thank you for all the suggestions and info. I talked to the lady I purchased the pup from and she wasn't aware of the changes for entering into the US. She is in total agreement to keep the pup until it's old enough to enter with the right credentials. In all fairness, she did refuse to ship it by air because of it's age and size. I told her I would drive to pick it up. The pup is actually nine weeks old and I was kinda pushing to get it before the weather turned real cold. I will be more patient and wait for it to get older. This is NOT a "t-cup" Yorkie and that's one of the reasons I was attracted to it. I wanted a Yorkie who would be closer to 6 or 7 pounds and this one was advertised as charting that. All the pups I saw advertised in my neck of the woods were all for 2 - 4 pound Yorkies. |

| Recorded conversation: (I use to work for Border/Immigration/Customs) Me: Hey are you sleeping? Tom: Yeah, but I need to get up anyway. Me: Oh, GOOD MORNING! I take it your working overnights again? Tom: Yeah I like it better in the winter, seniority is a good thing! Me: Tom the new rules about dogs, got a couple questions Tom: Oh no, what are you up to now little one? (Explained DebfromTenesee's situation) Tom: No way, no can do, not happening. The quarantine (confinement)agreements are for really rare situations, none of which apply here. Its a last resort thing, convenience is not a last resort and last resort is too detailed to explain right now, but a dog that is that small and that young can wait until they get their shots your friend will have to be patient and what the hell kind of scam is the breeder running? The regs are specific for last resort and impatience isn't one of them. She wouldn't even be allowed to fill out the app, forget it................................................ ....................................(rest of conversation was him and I complaining about our respective jobs!!!) I'm glad OP is waiting but there is so much info on this page and links that aren't in layman's terms that I just wanted to clarify. To anyone bringing a pup to the States from Canada.........follow the law its for the benefit of your pup.

If you were pushing to get the pup at 9 weeks old, than your breeder should have been firm and told you the risks of bringing home a puppy that far and that young. She also should have known about the rules for bringing a puppy from one country to another country--it's a simple Google search to find out the details. I just really cannot comprehend how a breeder can let a puppy who is much too young travel to another country, over 10 hours of traveling, because her customer wanted to get the puppy before wintertime WITHOUT the breeder doing any research or customs checks and WITHOUT the breeder letting her customer know that her puppy was much too young. Even if the breeder was local, 9 weeks old is just outrageous. It doesn't matter if she didn't know about the new custom rules...common sense should tell her that it isn't normal for a 9 week old puppy to travel that long, that far, and into another country, no less!!! I don't know if it's just extreme carelessness or she's just a bad breeder, but one thing is for sure and you need to CAREFULLY evaluate her and look for red flags. I am DEFINITELY suspicious. How much are you paying for your pup? There are TONS of excellent breeders in Canada and there are EIGHT members from the YTCA that are residing in Tennessee that are probably going to be around the same price that this lady is charging you.

| Good job gemy & lynzy, you saved this gal in the nic of time. I shudder to think of this poor gal getting to the border only to have to turn right around and go back with a wee lil baby.

| YT Addict | I dont know if you have already paid but something you may want to think about to. I got my boo at 4 months. I love him dearly. But because he was that age i missed all those sweet puppy days. Also because the breeder did not take him on very many rides. Boo did not like riding in the car. We took him two blocks away to a dog park. He had to ride with his head out the window. That worked but wont for winter. We tried to go further with window up to see fall trees. He threw up 4 times with in 30 miles. So it might be a rough ride with your baby even if its 4 months old. |

I got my Baxter at 6 months because he was a smaller boy and the girl I'm getting soon will be 6 months (she was held back for show, just too small). I think it's the perfect age, they are still very much puppies and if you have a good breeder, they will be socialized and started on potty training! | |

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | You all know my passion for health in my breed(s), I have other questions much more detailed for Lynzy and I will also be asking the CDC about them as well, our Illustrious CKC has not even thought about them...... I will create a new thread for these questions that are pertinent to not only my situation by all breeder exhibitors to the States. In terms of puppy buying, I heartedly suggest puppy owners look at what is the *best time* to vaccinate for Rabies, and btw it is NOT 3months old, for any breed of dog!!! You do your research on this topic. There are some threads on here that should be searchable.

New Regulations are Just that new ... last 2 or 3 months. Mayhap this breeder does not do a lot of business with the States. Mayhap the CKC info bulletin went to her spam folder.... I just don' t know. But errors of omission can be made, even if you look at the rules as a layperson; I know I made them when importing my last show gal from Latvia. And trust me, I am one of your most investigative persons around, but I did get thrown for a loop, when the paperwork and my puppy got separated somehow! So don't blast the breeder for not being on top of things, until more is known about this breeder. I have my assumptions but they could prove absolutely false. And btw it is up to the IMPORTER to know the laws of their country!!! Which is why the dog gets shipped back at the importers expense!!

| YT Addict | I need to make a correction i am just not fast enought to catch the edit thing. My boo was not 4 months which is sixteen weeks and some months it would be longer. I got boo at 5 months. Which i would have liked to get him at 12 weeks. Which everyone says is standard. But i was not suggesting she get her puppy then. Actually cautioning her some things to think about before getting the puppy. If she had not already paid. Last edited by Graneet; 11-04-2014 at 01:35 PM. |
