| ![]() Hello all: I am looking into getting a Yorkshire terrier but have not been able to find ample information about their personalities. I know many of you have tons of experience with this breed. Could you please tell me the differences you have experienced with males vs females? I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks |

| ![]() I have two 10 week old littermates, one male and one female. From my recent experience I would say it depends on the dog and their personality. My male Teddy is very relaxed, affectionate, loves to sleep, and can not be anywhere without me or he will throw a fit (total mamas boy) Lola on the other hand is very independent, playful, vocal and wants everything to herself. If Teddy has something she doesn't she will push him out of the way to get to his water, food, bones, and toys. She'll constantly jump all over him and bite him and he just sits there like eh whatever lol. |

| ![]() We have two females--one is totally bonkers/off the wall/assertive, and in hindsight, has been from day one. We were attracted to her little "take charge" personality. The other is quiet, laid back, a great cuddler, easy-going. We chose her because we knew no house could handle two Gracies. Love them both to death!

| ![]() I have to agree with all of the above, yorkies are lil individual critters, no 2 are the same, they have the basic characteristics, but personalities are sooo different. I have had all females 4 in total all now past, I adopted a 3 y/o lil male several months ago, all had their own lil personalities. One thing all yorkies have in common is, they will capture your heart in a blink of the eye. Good luck in getting your lil fur baby. Please come back and tell us all about it. We all enjoy stories.

My boys are energetic, but not hyper. They require a lot of activity and stimulation daily, but relax while I am working. They are happy to cuddle in the evening after a big walk. They are affectionate and feisty. Two strong males. ![]()

The second year is easier. My boys are now 5 and almost 6. They still need lots of activity, but I don't have to worry about what they are doing every second.

| ![]() Terriers tend to be very energetic dogs, both male and female. A lot depends on their breeding. You do need to be very careful about who you buy from. The YTCA site has some good information about the breed and it's history. There is also some breeder referral information available. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America You can also locate an AKC sanctioned dog club in your state or surrounding states. These clubs are usually quite professional about their breeding practices and have breeder referral people that can point you in the right direction as far as breeders. American Kennel Club - Club Search and Directory You can do an all breed conformation club search and also a specialty search. Not all states have a Yorkshire Terrier specialty club but almost all of the all breed conformation clubs will have Yorkshire Terriers. Many times you will pay less for a good pet quality pup from these breeders than you will from most of the scams you find online and in the classified ads. If you are looking for the right temperament I would not decide according to the sex of the dog. It is more an individual thing. Seeing and handling the pups yourself will give you a good idea of what kind of temperament you are dealing with. |
