I paid 600 for Baxter 5 weeks ago here in Iowa. I went on how healthy he was and disposition, and looks. He is absolutly too cute has a great bite and lovely hair, is blue and gold and Akc registered. I think it is all in what a person wants. I just wanted a good friendly smart funny cute well behaved puppy. Thats what I got, well, the well behaved part most of the time. He still gets those little devil horns sometimes :D Oh Baxter also came with health warranty and everything. |
I would never advise to choose price over health, but I know that since the cost of living varies so much from one area of the country to the next, that that affects the cost of yorkies. I imagine vet bills and the cost of supplies are more expensive in areas such as CA, so that drives up the cost of buying a yorkie puppy. I want new members to see that if they look outside of their area that there are affordable puppies available. |
Cost of yorkies - Difficulty finding a good breeder I am glad you brought this topic up. I have been searching for a male yorkie puppy and I see a wide range of prices. I am most concerned that the puppy is as healthy as possible and exhibits the basic features of the breed. It is so confusing. Some of the dogs that cost more money are not being bred by experienced breeders or have champion bloodlines so it doesn't really make sense to me that they cost more. I don't know what to do! If anyone knows of a good breeder in North/Central Florida with reasonably priced healthy yorkies please contact me. Thanks! Lisa :animal36 |
I am almost embarassed to post. I KNOW I was taken and went ahead anyway. My Ginger that passed this summer was 15 yrs. I paid $350. for her and thought that was SOOOOOOOOO much $$ back then. When I searched for Mari, I wanted a tiny. The ones that specialize in tinies see you coming. I paid $2500. Shame on me. I knew it was way too much but I fell in love. I liked the breeder. I spent time in her home. Now, however I would do more searching. My husband is pissed! Mostly because she has definate flaws. Her tail is docked too short. Her legs are too long, her hair isn't what it should be but let me tell you she IS a lovie and I love her. When my husband makes note on 'those legs' I just reply that 'we paid extra for those long legs!' I swear she looks like a jack rabbit running! It makes me just laugh :p makes him go  He's just way to critical! ;) |

I sure have a story about when we got Sweetie. Four years ago my husband saw an add in the "IWANNA" for a female yorkie, 6 mos. old, 2.5 lbs - $600. He called and found the people had purchased her from a breeder and when they took her to the vet they told them she was too small to breed - so they were selling her. We met them at a McDonalds and we ended up trading a German Rueger rifle for her. Got the papers and called her breeder - she had been sold 3 weeks earlier at 3.5 lbs. and with the promise that they wouldn't breed her. She had lost a pound in 3 weeks - we suspect they kept her in a crate except to feed her (from their conversations). We had her spayed and she is now a healthy 6.2 lbs. If we had known she would be such a nice size we wouldn't have had her spayed. While we knew what to look for in a yorkie (teeth, straight back, etc.) we really lucked out getting such a fine pet. Can you imagine if the police had pulled up at McDonalds on a rainy Tuesday night and we were showing guns in the back of our Honda hatchback? In general yorkie puppies run around $1200 here now. |
Bailey was $400.00 he was born from family pets also, before they could get mamma spayed..so he was an accident, one time litter, I got to see his mom and dad,and brothers. |

CentralNewYorki, you said that you looked at a Yorkie in Ohio for $850. Would you mind PMing me with where the breeder was located? I live in Ohio and am interested in getting another Yorkie, a female this time. I am having trouble finding a breeder near me with females for a price in my range. Thank you very much in advance. :D :D |
I only paid $400 for Gracie. Her father is AKC registered and her mom is UKC, so the breeder initially told me that I couldn't get papers for her and that's why she was so inexpensive. Later I found out that I could get papers for her through APR and CKC. :) |

I have to agree with some here. I think that the advertised prices are set based on 2 main factors: 1) the 'going rate' in the area, which for what I can tell seems to be different depending on the area of the country you live in, and 2) the costs incurred by the breeder. I have no clue if breeders profit or not, really, I couldn't care less nor do I know or care what it cost for each individual breeder to raise a litter of pups. I would assume that since no two breeding practices are the same, no two set of costs would be the same? It would seem only right though that a breeder charge an amount that will at least keep them "in the green" when possible, otherwise, it is like you are paying others to get one of your puppies. |

As with anything you have to work within your budget and be a wise shopper. When puppies are little they are all cute- well most of the time. We have seen many of those pictures posted on here by folks looking for a puppy. They will ask if this sad poor representative of the breed is a "good deal" You as the buyer have to make those determinations. Will a puppy cost more from someone who keeps them until they are older yes- they have more shots and wormings and more TLC then a 6 week old puppy. We have the folks upset because they don't know how to take care of this puppy. Look at all the queswtions here on YT. You don't know how much to feed that puppy- how to trim the ears- what to do if a ear falls or if they just don't stand up. When you buy from a good breeder you know what to feed and how much- they go over ears, and all sorts of things that you need to know. They are there after you purchase the puppy. Look at the threads complaining about the puppies temperment- size -coloring and poor coat. How many of these are those $1,000.00 and less puppies. There are nice puppies to be found for less then $1,000.00 but there are not as many as you might think. It is like buying a car- with all the bells and whistles- if you want a pedigree with CHampions, full registration, after the purchase help and health warranties, older puppies, better medical care and a nice representative of the breed you are going to pay for it. |

holy moly. i had a dog with allergies once so you and Chachi have my sympathy. it's a lifelong struggle to keep them comfortable. good luck to you both! |
We paid $800 for Rowdy in Austin Texas |
In my area of WV they go for $500 and up for males and $800 and up for female. My first Yorkie I only paid $250 for him because the breeder said he was going to be big and I drove to KY to get him that was over 10 years ago. He only got to 9 pounds which I thought was pewrfect with my small kids. My female I have now was $400 because she was 7 months old when I got her. |
I haven't read all the replys, but I'm starting to think I got a STEAL! I got Merlin north of Dallas Texas for $325 in 98' and Mickey for $350 in northern Oklahoma in 01'. Both are registered and came from reputable breeders. They have made up for the costs via vet bills, but despite the costs.. they are worth every penny!!! |
The breeder that we just got Isabella from sells her males for $550 and her females for $750, we're in Missouri. :) I've seen several listings around here for yorkies even less than that, ranging from $500 and up, even for females. |
I got Zoe for $650.00 and we sold her puppies for $850.00....I recently had someone offer me $1500.00 for a puppy if I would breed Zoe again....I turned her down. |
Home-raised (great little puppies) in my area (Spokane, Washington) go for $750 to $850. These are puppy-puppies - not breeding or show quality - even though some of them probably could be used for these purposes. But - let's be honest - even $500 or $300 can be a fortune for a lot of people. I know a lot of people struggling to pay their heating bills this winter in Spokane (and this is a very warm winter)! My first yorkie that I ever had I paid 250.00, that was almost 11 years ago. My ex-husband still has that yorkie. He was around 7 lbs and very healthy. When I bought Raven I paid 600.00 for her. I did incur some expenses at first, because the breeder gave me her at 8 weeks. Shes fine and very healthy now. She weighs in close to 4lbs. My next yorkie I should be getting at the end of the month. He is a male and I'm paying 1000.00 for him. He comes from a very good breeder, with a 1 year guarantee. He is suppose to be around the 4 lb. range. I live in Illinois and see these babies going anywhere from 400 -1500 range. Kim |
I purchased Otis for $1,000 -- but I only found two breeders in my area that I felt comfortable with. There aren't many breeders that I know of in Utah.I could have looked out of state, but I wanted to spend time with Otis' "parents" and to get a feel for how Otis was socialized. I had heard too many horror stories and I didn't want to take any chances. It was well worth spending the time finding a perfect match.... :D |
I bought Chico for $1100.00 with no special blood lines. I know on the net I could have found a better deal but Iwas too scared too pay so much and not get a puppy. I wanted someone that was very knowledgeable and had both parents on site and someone I connected with so I can call on. I am very happy with my furbaby even though alot of people stare at me wierd when I say how much he was. |
yorkies under 1,000. They are out there. But the internet is a better way sometimes to get more money. If a breeder sells locally, many times they do not get as much money. Does not always mean an unhealty puppy. It does mean usually better contact with breeder and if good, and price does not show good always. the breeder will be there for them. There are some pretty ugly looking yorkies for sale at times, on petfinders and those places. I know some one who bought from a huge show breeder, bought the yorkie at 6 months, was told all shots were given, the dog got parvo and was another 1,200 to keep her alive at the vets. she paid at that time, 1,200 as the puppy was already 6 months old. Breeder was no help what so ever. In fact was not nice at all. Called the buyer an idiot. The yorkie was so aggressive would attack any other dog in it's site. It is sad but there are all kinds out there.... |
