Now let me explain first that until I got my Zeus ( Shih Tzu) and Athena ( Yorkie), i had always owned Large breed dogs. In the past I had a 145 pound German Sheppard, and 55 pound Sheppard, a Rotty / lab mix that probably weighed at least 80 pounds. and so on. So I love big dogs as much as I do the little ones. BUT, If I take Zeus an Athena to say Petsmart or any place where there are a lot of dogs, I wont walk them. I pick them up or put them in carts. WHY? because there are too many BIG dogs around that I dont know and there fore dont know if they can be trusted. why do I fear the big dogs around them more then the little ones. well the answer is simple. If a great Dane snaps at and or bites another large dog JUST ONE TIME, say for example a lab, yes, it could and likely will cause damage. but only two one small part of their body and very likely wont be serious or rather fatal damage. But, if that same Great Dane, or mastiff, or Shepard, or even a lab or golden retriever was to bit at JUST ONE TIME my little Yorkie, chances are there will be very serious injury. even very possibly fatal injuries. This is simply because my little yorkie is small enough that her whole body could fit in that large dogs mouth. That ONE BITE would cover a significant larger amount of her body, an depending on how hard it bit, his teeth could basically go right strait through her entire body, causing sever internal organ damage. Simply because she is so small and thin an the larger dogs mouth so big. If that Large dog was to bite just one time another large dog, it would only likely cause injury to say just a shoulder and muscle or something similar. Im dont mean to say the larger dog bitten wouldnt be hurt an it is ok by any means, but just comparing the amount of damage that can be done in both cases. I think most small dog owners are aware of this and so it is only natural AND RIGHT that they are going to fear that and want to protect their little babies from such possible serious injury from a large dog they dont know and trust. But the large dog shouldn't be breed specific, but Size specific. but again, I do understand your fear for this reason. Last edited by R-Teddy; 09-07-2014 at 08:19 AM. | |
