From the time he was a young pup, I really encouraged him to do a lot. If there was a tree trunk down, go ahead... try to jump on it! A bench at a park? Hop on it! Those little parking bumper things, he likes to balance on. Almost like outdoor environmental agility lol. He didn't start diving into the pool right away, it took 2 summers.

And he actually does have fears - he is noise sensitive, terrified of fireworks, thunder, gunshots, etc, but usually outdoors, he is in element and just soaks everything up. I protect him, of course, but I don't baby him or treat him like a porcelain doll.

Thanks everyone! I feel so much better now that I know it is not a bad thing to let her go swimming. The funny thing was that when she came up from the water she did not cough up water or sneeze or anything. It was like she held her breath. She was a natural swimmer. I think after every ones replies I will put her back in the pool.

Also if at all possible teach her how to get out in the event she should fall in when no one's around. Freaky accidents do happen and teaching her how to get out could prevent a tragedy. Are there steps she will be able to climb out on her own?

my first yorkie (over 20 years ago) went kayaking with us one day. We had her leash on her and she was just sitting there, then all of a sudden she jumped in and sank like a rock. Thank goodness we had her leash on and could pull her up! Gave me a heart attack! But she went on to be an amazing little swimmer who loved water

Jackson seems like a wonderful little baby. You sound like you did right by him to encourage in what is wanted to try. Sophie is only 10 months and she does not show a lot of fear. She does not like loud noises either. When it thunders a lot she wants me close. So long as I am she is fine and will go to sleep. Yorkies are the most wonderful furrbaby anyone could hope for.

This is an above ground pool and there is no way she can get in unless we put her there. She will not go unless my husband and myself are in there. We also have a kiddie pool in her pen with her and the water is not deep she can stand up and it only gets to her belly and she can get out of it on her own.

We took a trip to Key West this summer and saw a Yorkie on a Paddle Board.. The owner said he had been doing it since he was a puppy.

Lola not only loves to swim she also loves to dive, enough so that I now enter her in competitions (she never wins)

she spent a good part of today in and out of the water in our lake

here is another one of her in a diving competition.

I know she loves to go swimming because when she sees me get her life jacket out she practically leaps into my arms and spins around all excited. She will even dive off the diving board at my sister's swimming pool. She is my 5th yorkie and the only one that has ever like the water.

I love that little dog! Lola is awesome. I can't even get Jackson off the docks yet!
