Question obsessed with tissue paper...pls help!!!

Hi...have been MIA for a bit since mah kiddos are on summer vacay

Our lil LiXi has an obsession with tissue paper and it's driving me bonkers!!! I will randomly find bits and pieces and sometimes whole sheets (she will steal it out of our lil trash can if mah 3yr old doesn't push it down LOL)

Anyone else's lil one love tissue? If so, did they grow out of it & stop?

TIA!

Tissue paper is favorite of many dogs. You can work on training by saying no, and teaching her to 'drop it'. Reward her when she does it right.

For safety, I keep all trash cans out of reach/inaccessible to the dogs. My boys usually don't touch things that they consider mine, but they have their moments. Teddy chewed a book binding recently, and he once chewed a zipper out of my warm up jacket.

I have a tissue lover too, she's a year and a half and still does it, but she's gotten better.

Paper shredding is annoying, and I correct her for it, but it really doesn't bother me. At least paper isn't expensive or dangerous (she doesn't eat it, just shreds it).

For starters, you could buy a taller, more substantial trashcan with a secured top. Then also train her not to go around the trashcan. Watch her closely so you can catch her going to the trash can and when she begins to approach close to it or sniff at it, say "No!", clap your hands, lock eyes with her as she looks up at you and walk into her space until she surrenders your trashcan and its contents of lovely tissue to you, turns away and leaves the area. Then walk behind her until she's moved quite a way off from the trashcan and stand there staring at her for a bit, then walk back to your trashcan, claiming the area as yours with your no-nonsense stare/strong body language and preventing her return should she try, thus letting her know she hasn't permission to approach the area of your trashcan from now on.

Keep repeating this exercise until she's gotten the message that your trashcan is off limits to her. Most people will train this type of exercise for one - three days and give up and wonder why their dog can't learn what they try to teach it but it takes more like persistent training for two - four weeks to properly start to ingrain the message in the dog's brain that they don't have your permission to approach or touch your trashcan.

You can even move the trashcan to the middle of the den for easier access and to set her up for a training session. Once she's clever enough to pick up on the fact that she cannot now approach the trashcan and walks away quite quickly on her own, begin to walk past her, call her into the other room and give her a treat and praise. She'll begin to associate the fact that she's now actively avoiding the trashcan with getting a treat and it will reinforce her staying away from it while she's still in the training phase.

In the animal kingdom, pack leaders usually claim things or areas as their own by running other pack members away and use their body language and stony stare to send a strong message to the other pack members that they are now not to approach the thing/area. I'd just keep giving her the training sessions with the trashcan until she learns to stay away and you never find her trying to get into it anymore.

my 4 past yorkies all were paper shredders right up to time they went to rainbow bridge (ages 10 to 17 y/o) , even my lil adopted guy, toilet tissue, tissues, napkins, over the years I have trained MYSELF to keep tissues out of their reach but accidents happens. They just LOVE to SHRED.

Bubba used to love toilet paper but has stopped pulling and shredding.

Just remember some money is paper. Just ask my mother. She has half a $20. and is still waiting for the other half

Mine loves any paper products but she only take them when she was a puppy. When she was a puppy though we had to buy trash cans with lids and replace all the trash cans.

Lexi loves toilet paper too. She has gotten her mouth on some a few times, but as long as the trash can is not full she wont get it. She also gets really angry when I try to take it away. Whenever she gets something she's not supposed to have she runs into her crate (like I can't get her in there lol)

Jeanie, think I could use this approach to keep the 9 month old Ernie away from the CAT????

LOL! I know what you mean! I think if I had a cat Tibbe would worry it silly trying to chase and play with it unless I stopped him. But seriously, you can use that method to keep a dog away from any space or object you choose as everything in your home is yours unless your fuzzy little Yorkie is paying the bills from his Yorkie bank account. You should be able to keep your kitty Yorkie-free if you've a mind to.

Thank you so much for all the responses & advice my other pups never had a fascination with tissue, paper, or anything but their toys LOL so I was amazed how crazy this teeny weeny pup could be so obsessed!

I switched the mini trashcans with ones with lids so my 3yr old can still throw her trash away & lil miss tissuemonster can't take it out right after but if my girls leave their drawings or coloring pages on the floor...it's a shredding fiesta LOL

I wish I had a pix of LiXi with her tissue face...it's hilarious!!!

My little girl has the tendency to snatch the toilet paper we are using to clean her #1 >.> and then run around the house with it soiled X_x; She doesn't do it all the time and sometimes she doesn't give signs she's about to pounce, but give her enough opening and she'll bolt for it lol ^^;;

My Annie just LOVES to shred paper. It doesn't make any difference what kind, paper towel, tissue paper, toilet paper, copier paper, etc. I really don't mind because she shreds it into a pile and it's easy to clean up. Have managed to stop the T-paper grabbing though. Thank goodness!
I get the impression that it is instinct to make the pile of paper, maybe she is making her bedding to lay down on??? She does like the paper towels the best!
