Exclamation Paranoid about letting Laila walk outside

Please help me. When we first welcomed Laila into our home, I noticed she had this little brown stuff on her. I did my research and found out it was flea dirt not regular dirt. I was livid, but kept my cool as I did not want my husband to freak out. I took all the proper precautions and took care of it that day. I did not see any fleas on her or anything at all, just the flea dirt. I also put her on Sentinel as well that very day. I have been afraid to put her down outside now. I have not let her down at all outside since that day. We have had her a little over a week.

Please give me some pointers and if I am just being too paranoid. Is the Sentinel enough? Also, we move to our new home soon so I want to treat our yard with flea and tick killer. Is there anything that works but is safe for animals.

PS: As of now we live in an apartment complex near woods. I have seen Skunks and deer in our yards before. This is another concern.

Welcome to YT, I don't know about Sentinel, I only use Frontline, did you read the package instructions on the Sentinel. Frontline can be used 24 hours AFTER A BATH. I bathe my dog in the morning, the next day (24 + hours after bath) in the evening I apply the frontline, then let my dog out the next day, I give the frontline time to work , I have deer and other wild life critters. Never had fleas or ticks using Frontline, but always applied in the manner above. If you need to wait 24 hours after a bath to apply the Sentinel, but you applied it the same day of the bath it is not going to work. If Sentinel can be used the same day as the bath you should be fine, but let me add this. If you saw only flea dirt and no fleas that does not mean you may not have fleas or flea eggs in your home. You need to wash all dogs bedding and your bedding if your pup goes on your bed, and vacuum your entire house, bed, sofa, where ever you dog has been. Empty the contents of the vacuum into your OUTSIDE TRASH PAIL. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum daily to ensure no fleas or flea eggs are still in your home. If you have applied the Sentinel according to package directions there is no reason why you cannot let your baby out. Many members use Sentinel. You will be advise and suggestions given from other members shortly. I just re-read your posting and it appears you did not bathe her before applying the Sentinel, so not sure what you did. A bath should be given to remove the flea dirt, that is flea poop as I am sure you know since you researched it. Good luck

Well, Sentinel is actually a pill. And yes everything has been washed and vacuumed multiple times. We washed her in Dawn as the vet recommended, and the medicine kicks in 3 hours after it is taken. Sentinel is a birth control so the eggs and larva can not live. Adult fleas will, but will not be able to reproduce. So I am good about them not being in the house or on her any longer I am more scared of them getting back on her if we go outside. I will look into frontline. I am wondering if we can do both.

No you cannot do both as you will over medicate your pup. If she is on a pill then you can bathe her as needed. When you move and treat your yard just don't let her out for a day or so until the treatment settles in the ground. We use liquid and granules on our yard and I keep my dogs in until safe to let them back out. Lowes and Home Depot have several different kinds and I always read the directions before letting my dogs back on the grass. I live in the country so it's impossible to treat all of our land but my pets are also on flea and heartworm control. They never have fleas or ticks. Also you might be seeing eggs on your pup and not poop. I would bath her and rinse those off.

I have used Comfortis pills in the past it starts working one hour after taken, that kills adult, baby fleas, larva, eggs, it must be the same as the Sentinel . This past fall I gave my newly adopted 3 y/o a dose of frontline, he came to me with fleas, I went back to the vet to get a package of Frontline as I only had that one dose, the vet gave him a Comfortis pill, she said it was ok to give even tho the day before I applied the Frontline on him, as Comfortis starts working in an hour. Always check with your vet before you do anything regardless the age of the dog. I don't feel using Frontline is needed if she was given Sentinel, if it is like Comfortis it works for 30 days, after 30 days you can use Frontline or a protection of your choice, many members use other products that works best for their area. Your pup is protected, you can take her out, if you have any leaves in your area I suggest not allowing her to walk in any leaves, that's where ticks hang out, not to say ticks are ONLY found in leaves, they are all over. Check with your vet about applying a skin based flea / tick prevention. I try to avoid giving Comfortis, I do ONLY if dog is INFESTED with fleas, I use Frontline all year because of the deer and there are a lot of feral cats that like to hang out under my deck in the winter, they are filled with fleas one of my dogs got fleas in Jan, because her hunting grounds was under the deck (mice & moles yummy yorkie hunting vermin) reason feral cats like it there too. Your pup is very young, always talk to vet before giving her anything.

Thanks Joyce. We will find a something to use for the yard. As far as the poop or eggs it was for sure poop as I allowed it to sit on a wet napkin and it had reddish brown coloring fading onto the napkin. Put that was last week and she has been washed and I have not seen anything else. Thanks for all your help and advise. I want her to enjoy outside because she seems to love it. I am just scared she will get another bug on her. Thanks for the reassurance. Everyone.

Is sentinel for fleas or heartworms or both? Maybe my advise was not accurate?? I understood that she was using Sentinel for fleas.

Sentinel is for heart worms and it keeps fleas from reproducing. Frontline kills fleas and ticks.

Sentinel is a Heartworm medication that also has a Flea Birth Control ingred in it. It makes the fleas sterile, BUT fleas can still get on them, but not reproduce.

Hence why I use Sentinel and two weeks later I give mine comfortis. I in no way shape or form do I ever, ever want to have a flea problem. I went through it one time many years and never again will it ever happen. Mine also do not do well on the applied topicals, hence why they get comfortis.

I suggest consulting your vet. Since Sentinel will not keep fleas off your baby I would mention this to your vet, tell your vet you want something that will kill fleas not just make the fleas sterile. And check about using topicals like frontline and Advantage on a 2.5 Lb pup. Even using topicals fleas and ticks will get on the dog, they have to bite the dog, ingest the blood of the dog in order to die. Keeping dogs off grass and away from leaves and trees can help preventing fleas and ticks getting on dogs. Speak to your vet, what works for one dog does not mean it will work for all dogs. And at 2.5 Lb you have to be very careful to not over medicate.
