Inguinal Hernia - Companion Pup?

We are thinking of getting another Yorkie for our 18 mo to have a companion.. Question: Would you purchase a puppy that has an inguinal hernia?

We are comfortable with the person selling the pup as we got our last one from her. She is being honest with us (and always has been)that at todays final Vet checkup, everything 'else' checked out fine however the female pup has a 'small inguinal hernia'.

Would you still purchase the pup?

I would want to know the cost of repair as it will possibly need repairing at some point. Did she say why she isn't getting it repaired before she releases the puppy to you...is it age? Is she willing to help pay for cost of repair?

I think those are the things I'd want to know before going through w/ it, but no, it wouldn't necessarily stop me from getting the pup as a hernia is generally not a huge deal. It can cause discomfort though, so I'd want to get it repaired at some point.

This will need to be repaired and will likely cost more than the pup. I would ask her to pay. I just had two repaired on a pup....I went to a soft tissue surgeon, not a general vet. It is a little more detailed surgery than that of an umbilical hernia.
Certainly not a big deal, but you should find out the cost of repair and let the breeder know.

I would definitely ask the breeder to cover the cost of the surgery for the repair. She the breeder could get a quote from her vet for the repair, and then your vet can also talk to her vet about this condition, and either agree or disagree with the quoted costs. But how-ever it turns out, get everything in writing, including if she does have a health warranty the stipulation of a pre-existing condition (which she is financially responsible for).

Inguineal or abdominal hernias are also thought to be hereditary and quite frankly should be the breeders liability in my opinion.

It is a positive note that she disclosed this to you. Often times a hernia can wait to be repaired when it is time for the dog to be spayed or neutered. If you don't plan on either s/n then the hernia unless it self repairs will need to be surgically repaired.

And while you did not speak to any desire to breed, you should know dogs with inheritable hernias should not be bred.

Sophia had an inguinal hernia.

We had it repaired during her spay. The cost was $100 on top of the spay. Since the repair, we have had no other issues relating to the hernia .

Knowing what I know now, I probably would have gotten it repaired by a specialist as Lady Jane suggested. Which, obviously, would be a bit more costly.
