| What Natural Remedies can be used on Anal Gland/Area? Good evening. I hope all is well with your little Angels. My Yorkie is having difficulty with her anal gland. I noticed feces was stuck in it so I washed her with warm water in the tub and washed the anal gland under her tail. It is a bit enlarged and reddish in color. She is able to have a bowel movement. I feed her wellness kibble and wonder if that is the problem. I heard that bringing the dog to the vet to have her anal glands squeezed is not good. I used a soft cloth when washing her the other day but it took a while before I was able to get the feces out and I wonder if I made it worse. IS THERE ANY NATURAL OINTMENT OR COMPRESS I CAN USE TO HELP HER ANAL GLAND HEAL. I MUST HAVE BEEN TO THE VET ABOUT SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST MONTH AND WOULD APPRECIATE SOME ADVICE AND HELP IF YOU HAVE HAD EXPERIENCES WITH THIS. My Yorkie is fixed and she is a female. I love her so much and don't know what is right to do at this point. THANKS. |

| Go to the vet if you do not know what your doing you could hurt her and make it worse. You don't want it to get so bad she needs surgery.

| First let me address your misconception that bringing your dog to the vet for this issue is harmful in any way. If she is having issues with her anal glands and her bottom is red she needs to go back for another vet visit. My Bogey was having issues with his anal glands and there were several things that the vet suggested to help him. First, he was placed on an antibiotic for his infection and the vet expressed his glands that day. She then said "ears and rears" meaning that dogs with anal issues many times also have ear issues. Which in Bogey's case he did have an ear infection as well. She then suggested that I increase his fiber content in his food which would help him to have a better poop, which in turns helps with the natural expression of the glands. I added canned pumpkin to his kibble which is a fibrous food. I was told to bring him back in 3 weeks to be re-examined which I did. His glands were impacted yet again and they were manually expressed and a return visit was scheduled in another 3 weeks to check him again. But before the 3 weeks was up he was having issues again. Back to the vet and another antibiotic for infection. What she explained was that each time he becomes impacted it can cause scar tissue to form in the glands and this was very concerning. So I continued the fiber and I asked her about trying Royal Canin Hydrolized Protien which i was already feeding Pebbles. She told me to go for and and I continued adding fiber. She said that some dogs will have ongoing anal gland issues and that she could teach me how to express this glands at home. It sounds gross but I just kind of laughed it off and told her....my love for Bogey has reached a new level. I think we now have his anal glands back to working properly. He is still on the RC RX food and I've stopped adding the pumpkin. When I bathe him I do express his anal glands and usually there is nothing that comes out. My suggestion is that you go back to the vet for a recheck to make sure she doesn't have an infection. If the glands become too impacted or infected they can rupture which is very painful. I don't know who put the idea in your head that having a vet express her glands is bad but that is just not true at all.

| Please take your baby to the vet ASAP. The red bump you are describing is the Anal Gland most likely about to rupture & this is VERY painful. The vet will express the anal glands & if needed prescribe antibiotics. Also anal gland issues are due to allergies, either seasonal or food allergies. It may be time to look into a food change. |

| Hi, it is not a red bump. Her rectum is a bit reddish. I have read that once you start squeezing the anal glands you have to do this always because the dog then loses the ability to do this naturally. I have heard that feeding grated raw carrots or ground flaxseed can help as well as warm compresses. Also PetAlive has a product called AnalGlandz... all things that are supposed to help the dog to naturally express anal glands however I have not tried anything yet. You are right about the food and allergies... but I cannot get her to eat any kibble except for Wellness Toy Breed. Thanks for your reply. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | If her anal glands need to be emptied, then I would get them emptied before doing anything else. Then, I'd change foods ASAP. Something in her food could be highly irritating her GI system, causing these recurrent anal gland issues. Nothing wrong w/ trying feeding carrots - they're good for dogs, just go slow at first especially w/ carrots. Flax is a grain, so just keep in mind it could be irritating to certain dogs. I know you said she is picky about foods, but you really should try something else. For pickiness, one thing to do is sprinkle Parmesan Cheese on the kibble as this is pungent and makes it more appetizing. You could also mix in some wet food. Lots of options. In the meantime, try putting some hydrocortisone cream or diaper rash cream on the reddened area.

Expressing the anal glands to relieve the impacted glands will not cause a problem but if the glands become scarred from infection, rupture or even not being properly emptied then you could have a lifelong issue. Like I said in my first post, my vet said EARS AND REARS meaning it's an allergy issue. I was able to get Bogey back on track but it did take a couple rounds of antibiotics, food change and 3-4 vet visits. IMO your $30 for a tiny bottle of homeopathy drops would be better spent on another vet visit and clearing up what sounds like an infection that wasn't cleared with one round of antibiotics.
