If her anal glands need to be emptied, then I would get them emptied before doing anything else. Then, I'd change foods ASAP. Something in her food could be highly irritating her GI system, causing these recurrent anal gland issues. Nothing wrong w/ trying feeding carrots - they're good for dogs, just go slow at first especially w/ carrots. Flax is a grain, so just keep in mind it could be irritating to certain dogs.

I know you said she is picky about foods, but you really should try something else. For pickiness, one thing to do is sprinkle Parmesan Cheese on the kibble as this is pungent and makes it more appetizing. You could also mix in some wet food. Lots of options.

In the meantime, try putting some hydrocortisone cream or diaper rash cream on the reddened area.
