Question about dog that doesn't pee outside anymore.... His everyone! Our Hercules will be 2 in August. We got him when he was 5 months old, and took 10 long months to het him to always use the bathroom outside. He would go to the back door when he needed to go. We had a harsh winter here in Ohio, but even when it was -30 outside, he would go out then run back in. Now that spring is here, he's decided to go inside on the carpet, and rarely goes to the door. We are taking him out at least once an hour while we are home, and keeping him in the pen when we are gone. We have tried crating him at night, but he has always howled and kept the entire family up at night, so we don't crate him anymore. Our vet says he sees nothing medically wrong with him that would be causing him to go inside now instead of outside. Is he just being a brat? Nothing here has changed, and we clean with Natures Miracle when he goes on the carpet, but he's still going back to the same places, and all of a sudden loves to lift his leg and pee on the wheels of our birdcage. He's was fixed last spring. Any ideas why he would wait til spring to decide not to go outside, and what we can do to change it? I'm hoping we aren't looking at another 10 months of training him.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | You need to start from the beginning. A great book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak. Good luck

We did crate him right next to our bed. He howls, barks, cries, and scratches at the door of the crate the entire time he's in there. When we keep him in the pen, he barks and howls the entire time too. We were afraid that we would have to start over. It just seems so strange that he would go out during the frigid cold temperatures to use the bathroom, and now that it's nicer, he wants nothing to do with it. Even using natures miracle and cleaning the carpets weekly, it smells and he goes in the same places. I really hope we don't have to retrain him every spring, it took forever the first time. Our library has the suggested book, and as soon as I can get it from our location, we will read it and pray it works!

My family is in KY so I'm familiar with the polar vortex and crazy winter you all had this past winter. It was ridiculously cold. I think like the other ladies have said, you'll have to start over with the basics. Darla seems to have a better memory than any other dog I've ever had. If she has a bad experience with something she remembers and wants nothing to do with it. She wiggled off my lap while I was sitting in the kitchen chair and landed on the hard floor. Scared the crap out of her and me. She will now no longer walk on the kitchen floor. I'm trying to teach her though that it's okay. I feel so bad, like I've scared her forever, I should have been more careful. I totally blame myself. Maybe before winter hits this year you could look into those fake patches of grass that they sale for dogs who go inside. That way it'll still be like going on the grass just without him having to get out in the cold to do it. Or maybe get one of those and have him pee inside from now on so you don't have to worry about getting him to go out. check out this site, I'm thinking to order one for Darla just so she has the option of going inside or outside. http://www.doggielawn.com/?gclid=CKi...FU5lfgod4rMATA Last edited by SarahBear1986; 04-29-2014 at 10:01 AM.

To get the pee smell out, the best thing I have found is using about 8 oz hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of baking soda and a couple of drops of dish washing detergent. Mix it all together and apply it to the area, let it soak in real good, wait for it to dry and then vacuum up the baking soda, if needed. This even works on cat urine. It's amazing!
