"Get a real dog!"

I have never had anyone tell me that before. They almost universally tell me how cute Cookie is, and same back when I had Minnie, whenever we're on walks or I take her into the vet or off to Petsmart, and so on.

After they spend any time at all around a Yorkie, most of those "big dog" guys come to understand just how wrong they were to think a toy terrier isn't a real dog who can usually back their big, "real" dog off and out of the room, if he's a mind to. I realize it's usually just due to the bigger dog's voluntary deferral to the little guy with the 'tude but it sure shuts the braggarts' mouths when my little guy runs their dog off.

In this instance, it was definitely a small minded thing. My husband's "friend" has always felt the need to try and put him down.

Funny thing, people definitely don't say this to him in person. He's 6'4" and 280... lol.

Honestly, most things that people say are positive. It's too bad that some people feel that they need to bring other people down because they are unhappy with themselves

I get that one in awhile, I got it the other day at the bank, he didnt want to pet him because he wasnt a big dog, butt head his loss. Im sorry that happened michelle

Seriously though, I do dislike the term "toy" for any dog--the AKC could have chosen better.

I just assume it's a typical kind of remark from an insecure man that is lacking in a particular area....you know the ones that need to compensate with big bully dogs, a car with a roaring engine, etc. to seem "manly".

I completely concur with this. I get smirks from the low intelligence male cretins that unfortunately are now taking over the UK. One more brain-cell and they'd compete with Cacti for intelligence etc. That said, there are so many people on our walks who just want to pick Crystal up and hold her. The owners of the beach cafe, where we stop, compete to give her little treats. Most ladies just melt when they see her close up, but women are way ahead in emotional intellectuality than men any way.

It seems revealing sentiment, compassion or admiration just doesn't fit the macho profile these modern day idiots pursue.

I've had many big dogs and now in an apartment and towards the end of my life I have a very small dog, with a huge heart full of love...

I am so tired of hearing this... "Get a real dog!" One of my husband's male friends had the nerve to tell him this on FB. Just because my dogs eat better than your children and we enjoy actually spending time with our dogs does not mean they are not "real" dogs.

I would have replied "Oh, that's too funny. I just told your wife to get a real man!" Of course, I'm a bit*h. :/

My son wanted a "real dog" when he was 11 - so we got him a Lab - he loves all animals & now has 2 Labs & 2 Chi's, 2 goats, 2 horses, 2 cats, 2 pigs - sounds like Noah's Ark!!!

Depending on my mood (how bitchy) I feel, I reply with a sweet smile and say, "Thank you for your comment, have a nice day", or "I think I'll just stick with my AKC Champion, you can have your real dog."

I've had someone tell me that before and also that my baby is as small as a "rat." There are so many other small animals out there like bunnies and baby tigers....... not a rat. I could've said many things about their 60 lb bulldog.. because I just don't find them cute and super lazy... but I didn't. Some people don't understand that a pup is like family. You would never go around telling someone their baby looks like a rat or doesn't look like a "real human".. people forget this. I was bathing my furbaby one time and you know how when you bathe a yorkie it's basically just their little body because their hair is wet.. well, the 60 lb bulldog owners called her ugly.....HOW DARE YOU!!

Meanwhile when my baby goes to the vet everyone stops to say she is so cute and they love her outfits... don't see anyone saying that to their bulldog Haters gonna hate! LOL

I actually find all of those "insulting" comments amusing. I KNOW who and what my precious pups are and their value -- both love and $$ wise.
