"Get a real dog!" Does anybody else get this comment from big dog owners? I am so tired of hearing this... "Get a real dog!" One of my husband's male friends had the nerve to tell him this on FB. Just because my dogs eat better than your children and we enjoy actually spending time with our dogs does not mean they are not "real" dogs. I am so mad, but am biting my tongue. lol |
I've only heard it from a few people, usually in joking form. But one of my dads brothers made a comment once when he was over visiting about our little yappy dogs, and then I went on to showcase Jackson's tricks AND he watched in amazement as he dived in the pool. It shut him up REAL quick. The amusing part to me is the people who usually say things like this have these "big dogs" that are nothing more than a wall ornament in their homes. Never get out for walks, never see anything but their fence and walls. Ohhh but he's a "REAL DOG". |

You are so right about many larger dogs being ornaments who are rarely, if ever, walked. This is the case with many people in my neighborhood. I'm surprised though when I take the boys to places like the home improvement centers that the big, burly men are usually the ones who have nice things to say about Max and Teddy. Even when my dad walks Teddy, men will stop and compliment Teddy. |

I think our "toys" can out last a lot of big dogs. I know Galen does. It is that one person that always thinks they are funny with that comment. :sfunslap: |
Obviously they are jealous. Just pity their small mindedness. |
Ignorance. That's what it is. |

It's amazing. When one is 6'2" tall, weighs 275 lbs and is generally a rough looking guy, how infrequently statements like that are made to him. I've always agreed with the signs that say... "Don't worry about the Dogs, watch out for their Owner". |
I love it when big rough looking guys melt when they see Lola. Most of the men who pay attention to her are older, big/rough, or very feminine. I've also noticed black men seem to like her the most. The worst thing anyone's ever said was when my neighbor called her a rat, she's a miserable old bat anyway. |

I think when someone says that it is because they truly dont know any better they dont know the love of a small dog. Someday they will get married and the wife will want a small dog or some situation and then they will know |
:D I love, love, love it when Andy harnesses Harry up and I watch them walking off down the road....Andy all big and burly and Harry trotting along beside him with his tail waving happily.... I must admit, we've never had a nasty or derogatory comment - quite the reverse - people (men and women) of all shapes and sizes tend to stoop down to say hello and stroke him....whether Harry lets them is another matter.... :D |
I've heard it a time or 10. The other one I get a bit of is "my dog will eat yours for a snack" Really really annoying |
Haha. Too cute. I remember when I first got Wallee meeting a lady in pet smart who said her neighbor was a long haul truck driver. He had a yorkie to keep him company on his runs. Kept him dressed in leathers. Lol Also this tiny I am looking after (all 3 lbs of her) is always dressed in a dress to go out. When her parents are out shopping her dad (also a big man) will often sit outside the store waiting for his wife to shop. He says that he is amazed how many people approach him and want to pet Anyah. |
