I suspect too that this may be C-diff/Clostridium, which normally responds to Metronidazole. Metro is normally dosed for 1-2 weeks, but to clear Clostridium, the dog needs to take it for 3-4 weeks. Changing up on ABs with this bacteria will only make it even more resistant.

I adopted Cody Nov. 12 2013, Nov. 13 I took him to vet for colitis, I was sent home with 3 meds(I threw empty vials away when finished so I don't know the names of what he had, one was a anti-Bi) you have to keep in mind, when the dogs was surrendered he had colitis for 13 months with no medical care for it, this is NOT GOING TO BE a 1,2,3 fix. I have had dogs that had colitis, when I saw puddle of poop with mucus & blood they went to vet on a emergency visit, in a week or 2 they were cured, another reason why I threw out empty vials, at the time I adopted him I didn't know he had colitis until he was home and I walked him before coming into my house, also when I adopted him I did not know he had this for 13 months, and my vet did not know this either, we both thought it was a "just gotten" case. I had Cody 2 weeks when I was able to make contact with prev, owner (at that time Cody was on anti-bi and 2 other meds). Today was to be his 3rd visit, but due to icey roads I cancelled todays appointment, new one is for March, due to bad weather and me having to cancel 3 appointment new appts. 2 weeks later, that is a total of 6 weeks that was MY FAULT due to mother nature. 4 months = 17 weeks, deduct 6 weeks due to my cancelling leaves 11 weeks Cody has been under my vets care, with just 3 visits. Again, thank you for your 2 cents lol, I have learned much from a thread posted JUST OUT OF CURIOUSITY, and I have you wonderful members to thank for this. Hey, ya never know, I may be recommended to travel to Tx for the best treatment, and that I would do for a lil boy that rescued me.

Unless tests are done on your pup which I suspect have not been done since you say your vet is not charging you, then I think you are treating symptoms.

You went on another thread and told a woman to take her pup to Penn, yet every time someone here on your thread suggests either a specialist or a vet school, you make excuses and swear your vet will refer you. I would have to ask when at this point. My vet would have long ago suggested further testing if the symptoms were still going on.

the post to this person was because she said she did not know of a vet school in her area, she lives 1 hour from me, she was going to EUTHANIZE the dog, for that reason I called my vet to see if there was a vet school in HER area, and was told of PENN. I begged her to take the dog there and to NOT EUTHANIZE him because she could not get a vet to diagnose what the dog had, or to surrender the dog, I even spoke to the person at my vet that handles rescues to see if they would accept this dog. I did this so she would have a choice and not EUTHANIZE. So I AM NOT RECOMMENDING NOR ADVISING PPL TO USE PENN , YET REFUSING TO USE THEM MYSELF. Ya know, it's really funny how in trying to help other ppl, my issue is getting twisted all out of context. (posting before I loose this)

I am not twisting anything out of context. She seems to be dragging her feet about a specialist just as I see you doing. Sorry if that makes you want to lose it...it is simply how *I* see it. The excuses you make about your vet just don't cut it with me. You are making a choice to treat without a diagnosis. I don't really know what your vet has said to you about that. I would be surprised that a vet would not even mention further testing on a pup who has had these issues for 17 months!!!

Bottom line is he is yours and you will do as you will do just like that person. Honestly, if she chooses to euthanize, it is much better than letting a pup suffer. I asked her to reconsider because he is young, but I was not going to shove that in her face...and not going to shove surrendering him in her face either. I suggested what I believe to be good things to do.....just as I and many others have done for you on this thread.

if you read all postings and replies you would not be posting this. I NEVER SAID "I SAW COLITIS" What I said was "the day I adopted cody, when I got home I walked him before bringing him into the house, he pooped, it was a puddle of soft stool with mucus and blood, I knew it was colitis" I knew what it was because I have had dogs that had colitis, very soft watery stool with mucus & blood. If your read every page you would know why I am NOT PAYING FOR THESE VISITS. I wrote I had just put down my 16 y/o yorkie, to say I was devastated is an under statement, when I got the call to come say my good byes to my beautiful baby girl, she has to be put down, I thought I would have a heart attack. I have been with this vet since 1984, she knows how I am with my yorkies, I see they are not acting normal I bring them in on emergency visits (more $) which is not an issue for me when I see my dog is sick, cost means NOTHING. 6 weeks after putting my baby girl down my vet called me, someone surrendered this yorkie, my vet called me, she said "I have your dog here" my heart dropped to my toes, I am thinking she is talking about the baby I just put down, I have her ashes, how does she have my dog? is my baby still alive, do I have someone elses ashes here? I asked her what she was talking about. She tells me they just received a 2 y/o male yorkie, neutered, micro chipped, house broken, it was a surrender, not a abused dog. I told her NO MORE DOGS FOR ME, I AM LONELY, SICK, 1000% ALONE first time in 35 years without a dog, but I can no longer take the pain of having to put babies down, also told her all my babies were female, I didn't want a male because the mark everything, she said he Is neutered, he may or may not mark, she BEGGED me JUST COME SEE THE DOG, she said there is something about him that reminds me of your Matese, I asked her what that was, she said his ears, Matese had the biggest most beautiful ears, so to satisfy her, because she thought to call me when she saw this dog, I went JUST TO SEE THE DOG, I knew I was safe to see him, because I knew I would never have a male dog. I went, I saw, I took him home, I was SUPPOESED TO HAVE ADOPTED A HEALTHY DOG, he was NOT, reason my vet does not charge me. and how you can make such a statement " Unless tests are done on your pup which I suspect have not been done since you say your vet is not charging you, " how can you say no tests were taken??? when I took the dog in on Nov. 13 I took in 3 stool samples, so the dog is being treated for what the dog has,,,,,,REALLY, why don't you read everything before you go BASHING my vet. I AM STICKING WITH MY VET, she has only seen and treated him 3 times, My vet owns a 24/7 open 365 days clinic. Has vets and techs on premises 24/7 365 days. I am not saying she has all equipment that a vet school has, but maybe she does, I have used only day time emergencies, so I cannot say what equipment she has and I am NOT going to GRILL her on what her facility has. I was to adopt a healthily dog, she sees he is not, reason no fee is charged to me. Better to treat a rehomed dog, then to keep dog in the clinic, treat it until it is adoptable, that's how I see it. Now I know I am going to get posts stating that my vet gave me a sick dog because its better to treat them if owned, rather then keep the dog in the clinic where it gets stressed out do to the strangeness of the place, strange and scary smells, listening to dogs and cats crying from pain, loneness for missing their family, etc. read all postings and replies before assuming, or putting your thoughts into something you see on page 3 without reading pages 1 & 2. I am a bit lost on the above post; but let me say this: I said that I SUSPECT that tests were not done. I read everything and I am not bashing your vet.

I have read every single post and every single page. I know exactly what I am saying. You may not like what I am saying....I get that....but don't put words in my mouth (or in my fingers).

Three times over four months and you are the one who said he has symptoms and also said that he has had this for 17 months. I and others who have had experiences with sick pups have offered you suggestions that would help your pup! He sounds like he needs something more than he has been getting...just my observation on reading what YOU are posting. I read it all.

Has blood work been done? I'm concerned about him being anemic.

You really need to find the right antibiotic and stop trying various ones, it's likely making the problem worse. One of the ways you get c-diff is from antibiotics, they kill the good bacteria in your gut and the bad bacteria (such as c-diff) takes over.
So continuely using the wrong antibiotics is killing the good bacteria and contributing to antibiotic resistance.

I'd ask your vet to check his blood counts and ask about putting him on a probiotic.

I'd trust the ladies on here, especially those involved with rescues, they have a lot of experience with sick dogs.

No, actually your Cody has to live with your decisions. He does not have a voice or a choice. I do my best to draw that picture for people but sometimes it simply falls on deaf ears. I do my best and then I just pray for the pups who cannot speak.

Not trying to incite you at all....just, as you said, voicing my opinions. JUST trying to help your pup...and that is ALL.

I thank you for reading everything, as for me NOT LIKING WHAT YOU WRITE, NO I don't like the fact that you post you ASSUME my dog was not tested and was just being treated for symptoms, you COULD have asked WAS HE TESTED and BEING TREATED FOR SYMPTONS THAT WERE FOUND FROM THE TEST. I respect what you write, it's the way you state things lol . This week I spoke to a member of the prev. owner, I was given information that the prev, owner held back. I will pass this info on to my vet, what ever my vet can know about the past medical history IMO benefits my vet and my baby. But that's my opinion. Whether I like or dislike what you post, I am still learning from it, and you are entitled to post just what you think, but like I wrote IT'S JUST YOUR OPINION, I have already stated I am heeding advise all members have offered. But in the end, the decision will be mine alone, yet based on what other members offered up. I am more then aware of your concern for the welfare of all animals and I respect you for this as I respect all members here on YT. WE ALL LOVE ANIMALS and OUR AND YOUR YORKIES. I intend to do all that I can do to cure this lil guy, this I have stated many times. Anything , any comment you want to make on my situation will be considered, but, keep in mind, you think I AM DRAGGING MY HEELS, IMO, I am NOT.

I will ask my vet about this, thank you .

lol, I NEVER SAID I DIDN’T TRUST ALL THE INFO THEY GAVE ME. What I said is that I have taken everything recommended, suggested, advised into consideration, but in the end I will make my own decision, I am not a “follower” I read, I listen, if I am in 100% in agreement with a members post and IF I decide to follow what is / was recommended that then becomes MY DECISION, if it fails then I have only me to blame for the failure. WHAT I SAID WAS, I am sticking with my vet, when my vet looks me in the eye and tells me she has done all that she can do, and IF Cody still has colitis I am SURE my vet will refer me to a specialist. I have NEVER had a dog this sick to cross that bridge, She has treated 3 of my yorkies since 1984, always cured them, BUT, they were not medically neglected for 13 months,. There MAY be a bridge to cross, there may not be. I just have to wait. And if waiting is considered “dragging my heels” then so be it, BUT that will be my decision.they have a lot of experience with sick dogs.

Yes blood work was done, I have done a LOT of research on Colitis, Continuous use of antibiotics are not good, cannot remember entire article, he was given antibiotics when I first took him in (Nov. 13)

I also put up another thread “colitis vs. tap water toxic” on that thread I posted what a nutritionist I found on the internet recommended. Thank you for you response and your advise. I am ignoring NO ONES ADVISE, RECOMMENDATIONS, SUGGESTIONS, EXPERANCES I have then all tucked away in my head,

Not trying to incite you at all....just, as you said, voicing my opinions. JUST trying to help your pup...and that is ALL.

Thank you, this I know

Be careful with internet "nutritionists"
Many are just out to make a buck and those who are dedicated conduct themselves like professionals and consult with you, review medical records, and make SPECIFIC recommendations.

Colitis is an easy fix and when it isn't, it's because something more is brewing!!!
