Also wanted to add: A Specialist will do testing to make a diagnosis (tests that a regular vet can't do), and once that's done and a diagnosis is made, a treatment plan will be made up, to be followed up by your regular vet. You may not need to see the Specialist again, unless it's deemed necessary as your regular vet will be keeping the Specialist informed of your Pup's progress.

Folks here really do mean well. They are more concerned about your pup, however, than your feelings. As you said, take from their comments what you need and disregard the rest. Some of them really know a LOT, they rescue and save some very sick dogs at much of their own expense. Their experience can be very valuable. I post on another site (non pet) and the some of the people there are very judge mental and must all have perfect honorable moral lives and children. I try to ignore them too!

I am absolutely NOT insulted, I am not saying members are not concerned I know they are. My thread was for one thing, and one thing only, it got answered, and shed light on my confusion, but then was taken to another level. I NEVER asked MY DOG HAS COLITIS WHAT SHOULD I DO. I was offered advise, I didn't ask for it, I have learned much from what members have posted. To be accused of not taking anyone's advise or recommendations!!!!!!! well as they say "it is what it is" lol thank you my dear for your advise.

Exactly. My Cookie and Olivia have both been hospitalized in ICU and seen and diagnosed by specialists who drew up a treatment plan for them. My vet does their follow up lab studies and emails the specialists each time for med adjustments.

Let me start off on my right foot. Nov. 13 day after I adopted cody, I took him for FIRST visit because he had diarrhea with mucus and blood in it.( I had collected stool sample which was tested and blood was drawn on first visit) I was sent home with one antibiotic and 2 vials of pills to help his digestive system, follow up in 6 weeks. On the follow up day I was snowed in, had to cancel appt. new appt. was given appt. for 2 weeks later. (let me add this, I had Cody for 2 weeks, the prev. owner was in touch with the rescue team, prev, owner was concerned about who adopted the dog, asked the rescue gal would I contact her, I did, when I spoke to the prev. owner I told her the dog came to us with colitis, the prev. owner said they got hit b y hurricane Sandy, house was flooded and had to evacuate, the dog was put into a shelter for 16 days. When the dog was picked up he had diarrhea, dog was taken to “A” vet. Vet gave them meds, prev, owner gave meds until meds were finished, dog still had diarrhea, she said the vet told her THE DIARRHEA WOULD GO AWAY, NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT!!!!! Now can I really believe a vet would say something like that!!!!! So the dog went untreated for 13 months or 12 months I don’t know how long the dog was on the meds. So that being said) SECOND VISIT now 8 weeks later from first visit due to being snowed in. I collect stool samples from 3 diff. bowel movements he made the morning of his visit, 3 samples because each bowel movement was diff. in the amount he made and the texture, all had mucus & blood in it…When I see my vet I tell her what prev. owner told me, no treatment for 12 or 13 months, the vet has a tech check the stool samples each one I had labeled with the time he had them, the vet tells me of the stool findings, sends me home with 2 vials of powder to be sprinkled on his food. Follow up in 2 weeks am told to keep a log on his stools, texture. Etc. dog eats food for 3 days with this powder, then stops the eating, now I put powder in greenie pill pocket and give it to him that way. On the day of his visit, we have ice storm, again I have to cancel, new appt set for 2 weeks away. THIRD VISIT, I bring in 3 stool samples all labeled with the time of bowel movement the morning of his visit. Vet has tech check the stools. I am given report of stool findings, am sent home with Hills veterinary prescription Z/D canned and dry dog food, am told nothing but this food and water, feed ¼ cup 3 times a day and check his stools. Follow up in 2 weeks, that was for today. Had to cancel due to mother nature again, new appt. set for March 25th, now to answer your question as to why my appts. are so far away, yes 2 weeks is a long time. So here’s the story on the why. My vet is the owner of a 24/7... 365 day clinic, she has a full staff round the clock, if you dog gets sick or injured xmass day, new years eve, July 4th any holiday, if your dogs gets sick or injured at 10PM, midnight, 2AM, this clinic is open and fully staffed. My vet works 2 days, day time hours and 2 days of night hours, my vet employs 5 veterinarians, one day a week she travels giving lectures or seminars. I have night blindness, cannot drive at night, so I must have day appt. My vet is THE BEST and is booked solid on the days that she is in, I could see any of the 5 other vets immediately would not have to wait 2 weeks, just as I have one mechanic work on my cars, I have one vet work on my dog, so I have to wait the 2 weeks. I hope I have been clear and I know I have left some things out, this post is long enough and all that I have written I have written in so many posts, I feel like a parrot repeating myself. So again because my vet is so booked up I have to do the wait, and like I said I cannot drive at night for a night visit. One other thing, I did not join YT to make enemies, I joined to help ppl out, just like all members do, I cannot help out in medical issues, but in raising of yorkies I can help, I have had 3 yorkie pups (not all at one time) they were all 3 years apart. I know the breed, so I help where I can. I did not know I would ever start a thread, this thread “vet school vs. pvt. Personal vet” I started because many members advised / suggested to posters to get dog to vet school, I was confused why would member tell ppl to go to where students were LEARNING, their dogs would be used as guinea pigs, my question was answered and new light was shed on the whys, I now view vet school as a good thing. I never asked MY DOG HAS COLITIS WHAT SHOULD I DO, members offered their advise, their suggestions, their recommendations, I didn’t ask for it, but am very glad that they did because I have learned much. I didn't read all the responses, and I know nothing about colitis, however, I do know about drs and specialists.

A vet is like a general practitioner dr. They can treat your for things like a common cold and other things, but I wouldn't trust my care to a GP dr for something like cancer. They just aren't trained the same. Oncologists make it their business to not only get their MD, but to study further in a specialized field. The same with obstetrics. Yes, my GP Dr had to deliver a baby or 2, but he's not specialized in delivering babies, therefore I take that "illness" to a specialist. If for some reason, while seeing my oncologist, they found something that was outside their specialty, like hematology for instance, they wouldn't try to treat me themselves, they would send me to a hematologist- a specialist for what I needed.

Your vet is a General Practitioner. He/She is qualified to give vaccines and treat some stuff, but not specialized diseases. There are times when you need to stop talking and start listening, and this is one of those times.

You dog needs SPECIALIZED care, not vet care. Do the right thing by him and take him some where else. And honestly, your vet should have already referred you to someone else because your dog isn't getting better and you still don't have answers.

You say how much you care about Cody and how much you want to save him, yet you continue taking him to the same vet. That would be the equivalent of me taking my diabetic child to the dentist for treatments..... Stupid and it's gambling with the life of the thing you claim to care about.


P.s. If your vet was the BEST, Cody would be cured.

P.p.s the reason you seem to be making enemies is the way you talk to people.

I'm sad that asking a vet what equipment they have is considered grilling here. Actually, when a client asks my vet about anesthetic protocol and such she is pleasantly surprised that the owner knows to ask those questions.

All test results should be explained in layman's terms unless they are normal.
That is the vet's job.

I understand that you may be irritated with all the posts. lol not irritated at all, just confused how what I write is taken out of context, ppl read what THEY THINK I am stating, it’s like the phone game. But please know that several of us posting here have dogs with very similar issues and they are now managed and doing better. It isn't an attack on you or your vet. We have been there, devastated that our dogs weren't doing at all well, watching them feel awful, and then solutions were found.

I understand help is being offered, how ever, ppl replying reading into what I am posting, and what they are interpreting is all incorrect. These back & fourth postings is like e-mail or texting writing words, not hearing a actual voice what you write get read wrong by the reader, that’s why I don’t like email or text for important things, and these issues are to me important, and what I have written is getting pulled apart and being misread and misunderstood .

I just re-read my first post.
you are correct I did put in my first post would a vet school be beneficial, I must have been half asleep when I wrote that, I prefer to work on a one to one basis, meaning talk, see, deal with just one person rather then work with a vet school where I may have to deal with a diff person anytime I would have to see them. Also, your vet was a student once. It's how they learn. They get their book work done, then move onto the practical theory part, working hand in hand with a vet, who is teaching them as they work.

Those students aren't making decisions without the approval of a teacher. They're not going to do anything that their teacher hasn't heard their treatment plan, asked why that plan, and approved of it.

like I said, first visit given 3 things to take home, at this time I had not spoken to the prev. owner, did not know dog had this 12 to 13 months, I finished the meds and tossed the empty vials, do not need empty vials laying around, I thought the dog would be cured. also had not joined YT where the meds given would be beneficial to members looking to help out. So ya wanna hang me for that?

I totally understand throwing out the bottles, but when I posted you hadn't said what the meds were, it was reasonable to assume more than one was an antibiotic. You didn't think so and made a snarky comment about me needing to re-read my posts.

What I would have done is when people started asking what meds and tests were done was call my vet and ask to pick up the records, or at least ask what meds she had given.
If my dog were sick I'd be thrilled to have experienced people give a second opinion, and I'd give them all the necessary information. I've had dogs my entire life and have been through some health problems with them, but I know nothing compared to some members.

The main thing that bothers me is I feel like you're being way too passive with Cody's care. You need to know exactly what's being done and why and you need to do as much research as you can on your own. He's also suffered long enough, this problem needs to be taken care of ASAP. The best way to do that is to go to a specialist, you should contact one now because you might have to wait for an appointment.

I know how hard having IBS and being severely anemic *among other things* is on me, and I'm a lot bigger and understand more than a poor dog.

Please answer me this, is he anemic?
