10 lb bags of Royal Canin

Now that I have switched Cookie from Royal Cabin 29 puppy to Royal Cabin 28 adult, I can get 10 lb bags instead of the 2.5 lb ones for about half the price per cup of food. I imagine the 10 lb bag is great for people with more than one yorkie, but with only one yorkie to feed is it still a good buy? Will it generally stay fresh long enough to finish the bag when fed at a rate of about 1/2 a cup per day? Thanks!

I forgot to mention that we have a pretty humid climate in South Texas, which I'm guessing can't help. Anyone have experience using the 10 lb bags, especially in Gulf Coast states with high humidity?

I bought a 10 lb bag of it one time when i had one dog and it lasted for about 3-4 months. What I did was pull a bit of it out and put it in a Tupperware container to feed and then I kept the rest sealed up until I finished what was in the Tupperware container.

Thank you for the idea. 10 lbs at about 450 grams per pound and roughly 100 grams per cup comes out to about 90 days of half cup servings. Wow, that's a lot of time to have one bag of food!

I keep puppy and cat food in air tight containers. I don't purchase 10 lbs bag though, not yet. Maybe invest in a larger air tight storage bin? I also store the food in the pantry to keep it away from the sun. Just make sure to keep it in a dark, cool, and dry area.

I buy the big bag too, even when I had just one dog. I've never had a problem with staleness, the bags are great, foil and plastic coated. Just be sure and squeeze any excess air out of the bag before you seal it. I prefer clipping it to using their "zipper". I think I can get more air out of the bag. The problem with having any excess air in the bag or any type of container is the air has moisture and that's what causes the product to go stale. You don't have to worry about it spoiling, it might lose some flavor, but your dog will definitely let you know if it does. I think it smells just as good at the end of the bag as it does when I open it. Lol, I really like the way the food smells, sometimes I'm tempted to take some.

Yeah, they definitely let you know! One time I bought a couple of bags of RC29 off amazon to save a few bucks, and the second bag turned out not to be that fresh. It wasn't spoiled or anything, but this was when she was 4 months old and she wasn't eating as much as before. At that age of course you want them to be pigs so as not deal with hypoglycemia and all, and I was wondering what the heck. I had my suspicions, so when I bought another bag from Petsmart and compared the smells, it was obvious the amazon bag had lost a lot and I threw it out.

Oh, that's disappointing isn't it? We use to keep our cat food in a big Tupperware container, they were huge cats and really went through the food, but as the food dwindled, there was as much as four inches of air over the food in the container and this really made the food go stale. They wanted no part of the "old" food. I've since learned my lesson and only keep a weeks worth of food in a small container and the rest in the bag.

I just brought home a 15 lb. bag yesterday & I immediately seal about 3/4s of it in plastic containers & freeze them. I've been doing this for years & it works great. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this?

All of the above mentioned ways to preserve the food are super ideas! And RC comes in a sealable bag, so it staying fresh should not be an issue!

Royal Canin really doesnt seem to be that great of a dog food. only a 3 star rating, but is expensive. I feed mine Wellness Core. about the same price, but 5 star quality. But as for keeping it fresh. I agree with the above.

I really trust my breeder, Deb Sillers, who recommends it. And Yorkiemom1 does too. When two of the top breeders on yorkietalk known for some of the healthiest dogs recommend something, I gotta listen. I think I trust both of them more than I do Mike Sagman when it comes to a yorkie diet.

I'm not that much interested in how others rate the food, I think RC is far superior to Wellness and my two dogs are doing great on it. One of my dogs was a rescue and he was super allergic to foods and had to be on all sorts of supplements for intestinal distress. His food was wellness, but I got sick of chopping it up so that he could eat it and tried him on RC, he no longer has tearing eyes and gas and if he has allergies, they are showing now. His intestinal problems are a thing of the past. Also, the dog food adviser is actually a dentist with an interest in nutrition, I would rather take advice from someone he has studied canine nutrition.

Thank you for that! I am sure, like me, Deb has invested alot of hours and research into what is best to feed her dogs, her "pets", her breeding stock and the precious puppies that she brings into this world and sells to people that expect at the very least, a healthy puppy. As far as nutrition in concerned, RC meets my sometimes outrageous demands, and I have great confidence in anything they produce for my dogs....it is quality that is "evidenced based" in my breeding program, after using this dog food for over 25 years.

The problem with that website is a dentist is the one who does the reviews and it's also not just about ratings but research done on the company like do they have a vet nutritionist on hand, do they test the food, have they had recalls why and how did they handle it. If they had a small breed grain free formula I would try it but because my girl is allergic to at least one grain and it makes her break out I have to stick to grain free. They do have a prescription hypoallergenic small breed formula are vet may try. A lot of there 5 star rated foods are from very bad companys that I would never trust.
