Love Waiting for my new baby in Canada!

Hello all! I've been lurking for a while on the board doing research and now I've decided to take the plunge. I'm scared but excited. I've never owned a dog but all of you have been so helpful in sharing your experiences and knowledge - and adorable yorkie photos so thank you for that.

I pick up my little guy in two weeks. In the meantime I've been buying doggie products like a fiend and trying to still think up a name for him. And also reading up on training. I will upload lots of photos once I get him. I can't wait!

Congratulations. I hope you will be dealing with an honest and knowledgeable breeder. Will look forward to seeing pictures. Do you have a play pen for the pup? Puppy pads? I'm sure it must be pretty cold in Canada just like it is here in NYS!

Thank you! I am super excited for sure. When I held him in my arms and he lay there so sweet and calm, I just knew he was for me. I didn't want to let him go

To be frank, I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the supplies needed to ensure my baby is happy and healthy. So it's good to have YT members help point the way. I have a huge running list of stuff to buy for him and I feel like I've barely made a dent but I have almost 2 weeks for me to get it all. So I will get it all done by then I hope!

Thanks! I did lots of research to find my breeder so I hope she's good. I looked for all the signs of a good (and bad) breeder before settling on her. I spoke to her at length and saw many of her dogs at her home, who all seem happy and well-adjusted. She has a two-year health guarantee and told me if anything happens that makes me unable to keep him, I can return him to her. She has offered free grooming and training until the puppy is six months old, and has also offered to teach me how to groom him myself. She has also offered to board him whenever I need to travel and can't take him with me. So far, so good!

By the time I get him, he will be just over 4 months old. And he has spent all that time hanging out with his mama (who I met and is super sweet). So he's had a great start

As for a play pen, I bought the Richell Ex-pen with a lid in case he decides he likes jumping out of it. I've also bought some Iris pee pads because I intend to train him to go indoors so he doesn't need to go outside in the snow in winter. It is indeed freezing right now in Toronto!! I hope you are keeping safe and warm in NYS.

I have 6 little guys, 2 Chis, 2 Japanese Chins, 1 Terrier x and Zachary, my Biewer Yorkie. The 2 oldest will go out OR on washable peepee pads. The other 4 use only the pads indoors.

Having them all pad trained has been a life saver for us. I am disabled and can no longer take them out. And in bad weather we don't have to worry. We don't have a fenced yard and even if we did, I would not let them out alone for fear of escape or theft.

Looking forward to pictures,
Louise and Zachary the Biewer Yorkie

So very exciting. A book that comes highly recommended by Dog Behaviourists is by Ian Dunbar and called "Before and after Getting Your Puppy". It is an easy read and provides all the tools and tips you need to raise a well socialized, adjusted puppy. I hope you will search it out, I wish I had read it before Luca was 1 year.

Thank you for your advice. I was worried about training my puppy (who I've now named Max) to go inside because several people told me it was a bad idea - they said it would encourage him to go everywhere inside! But now I know I've made the right decision. I'm gonna train him well!

The book is great, thanks for the recommendation. I found it and I'm halfway through the section on before getting your puppy. It's given me some great tips about training him to accept his crate, which I need him to do as I don't want him taking free reign of my place yet. Maybe later

I do not understand why people say such things about puppy pad training. Puppy pads are a great aid in training a pup, especially small ones. The only time Gracie had a problem with the pads was when I decided to remove one. I had one in the bedroom and one by the patio door. When I removed the one in the bedroom she just went in the same spot she was accustomed to going. I had to put it back and ever so slowly move it toward the other one.
They are creatures of habit. Once they learn something, bad or good, it takes more training to change that in their minds.
If you train your pup correctly the first time you won't have a problem with the pads.

oh, i totally agree with you on this, gracielove...
wish my Gus had been pad trained but never even thought of it when he was a pup 9 years ago...
yep, had the same problem when i decided to move them, he then went on the floor where the pad had been, and only moved them a few feet...one isn't enough for him, as he never goes in the middle of a pad...

I love watching the Victoria Stilwell positive training on YouTube. She has some videos on pad and crate training and sooo many others that may be helpful. She also has a podcast with different dog related discussions, I really enjoy.

You sound so excited, and your life is about to change so much. I wish you health, happiness, love, and laughter with Max. My Katie came from a wonderful breeder not far from you, and she is such an amazing little girl. She was three when I got her, and she is such a bright, happy, athletic, loving, and friendly little girl. She has brightened our world and warmed our hearts and home. I wish you the same with Max.

Thanks for your advice. Good to know that moving the pee pad should be done gradually! I am keeping the pee pad area in his ex pen so hopefully he understands that association if I ever need to move his ex pen. I'll try to train Max very well so that he has only good habits. I'll be sure to check out Victoria Stilwell for some training tips. YouTube has a lot of great training vids!
