Love Yorkies or silky terrier x

There's a reason why yorkies are much more popular than silkys but still there pretty cute but why are they less known xx.

My little half-breed is the best of both worlds!
I love the shape of the face/head/longer snout of the silky, but I will say his l o n g body makes it hard to get fitting clothes.

My daughter has a silky and he is adorable we love him to pieces but I have to say Petey is one of the most stubborn headstrong little pups I have ever met lol. He is not a people pleaser like our Yorkies. He has a mindset that its going to be his way no matter what lol.

I prefer Silky's from what I've read/seen. They're not very common. In fact, I think they're one of the best kept secrets of the toy dog world. Even though Jackson is more than likely just a badly bred Yorkie, he acts more like a Silky and looks more like one from all descriptions, temperament, etc. I actually prefer the bit more of independence, a little bit more sturdiness, activeness, etc. It's just all personal preference.

"The goal was to improve the coat color of the blue-and-tan-colored Australian Terriers. The Australian Terrier and the Silky Terrier were the same breed for many years until they were eventually recognized as two different types and separated into two different breeds. During World War II, American servicemen brought some of these Silky Terriers home with them."

That describes Petey exactly lol. He is definately not a cuddler. He definately has the attitude. And can give you looks that say, hey I am really the one in control here lol.

Lol yeah Jackson is not a cuddler. I mean he is at certain points. Of course all night long he lays on me in bed, LOL... and at other times he has to be close, but not touching. He only likes so much lovin' before he goes off to his own space. He is VERY people pleasing tho. Well, "me" pleasing. He doesn't care about anyone else except maybe my dad haha. He's by far the smartest dog I've ever met and I am not just saying that because he's my dog. It's really hard to explain. But other people have told me they feel the same way.

I think Miles is actually 1/2 silky and the breeder or rescue person was telling a fib about him. He is 11 lbs. and had that very long silky body. He can be stubborn at times. But it's really hard to tell as both breeds are so similar in appearance. I know they sometimes like to breed a larger silky mama with a Yorkie daddy cuz the large mama can carry more babies than a Yorkie mama. Then the breeder will tell the potential adopter that the puppies are pure Yorkie. These breeders can be so shady one must really be careful to select a very reputable one.

Doesn't matter to me, Miles is a beautiful boy whatever he is.

I thought this too about Jackson. And have heard the same about using Silky mamas. Ugh. Who knows!

I DO have papers that lists his parents and say that he is a purebred Yorkie but who knows if they are legit. #sighhhh.

There are actually a lot of dog breeds that aren't all that well known. I have heard that some puppy mills and bybs will use Silkys to mix with yorkies because they are a little stronger/bigger, can be bred longer and have more puppies but maybe its a myth not sure. We think my moms yorkie rescue has some silky in him. I thought about my next dog being a silky but I really just love the attitude of the yorkie.

My Huey had a silky dam, yorkie sire. Dam was not a big silky, just about 9 lbs. Sire was 7 lbs. Huey is 8lbs. As for similar looks, yes and no. Seperately, you may think they look alike, but side by side comparisons of the breeds, using good, well bred examples, there are quite a few differences. I had actually never heard of a silky until my friend who had his dam got her.
I also like the sturdier frame of the silky. Huey isn't a big cuddler. He lays on me a lot, but on his terms (I actually think he's half cat...). He is very smart but very stubborn. He is independent, but wants to be independent NEAR his human.
I love the combination of the 2 breeds and if I ever get another, would like another "silkshire terrier".

Two of our dogs are yorkies (Ginger and Maggie) and one of them is a silky (Bella). We also have a maltese (Lilly). Bella is the smallest of all our dogs (between 5-6 lbs). But other than size, she fits the description of a silky to a tee. She's definitely quite a bit longer than our yorkies, longer snout, ears sit higher on her head, etc. She's a little spitfire too! They are all great pets though!

Default Traits

My little Mylee is an AKC Silky Terrier. Aside from her smaller size, 7 lbs, she is pretty true to all other Silky Standards. She is terrier through and through. I definitely see the Silky Terrier in my Mylee, and to me, she doesn't look or resemble anything Yorkie at all. Silkys don't normally like bows in their hair, or being dressed, but she will tolerate it. She doesn't give up when she puts her mind to something, like figuring out a way to get on the table, or in the trash. She is relentless. You definitely have to be on your toes and think one step ahead of them, because they are very smart little burgers, and will go back when you are not looking and keep trying. I LOVE that spunk about her, but I often say, some families would have given up on her if they didn't understand terrier triumph before choosing this breed. I will also say, she thrives on training. She LOVES learning new tricks, and she watches everything going on around her. When she get's it, she doesn't forget it. She is so so smart. I love this little girl. She has taught me a lot about myself too.

Here she is getting a hair cut.

But the difference is in your situation is that you've been told about his parents versus some breeder / rescue trying to pass him off as a full blooded Yorkie. I didn't really know the difference between a Yorkie and a Silky until I got Miles. They could have told me (unless there's nothing to tell which might be the case too lol) I wouldn't have cared either way. I guess to justify the dollars; Miles was almost 700.00 from rescue. He was a beautiful baby and I feel in love with him the minute I laid eyes on him.
