| Luxating Patella - surgery or not? Been for annual booster today for my Yorkie Piper, where vet has diagnosed severe luxating patella in both back legs. Piper has always had a srange gait, often running on 3 legs, or seeming to run slightly sideways. She also often when out for a walk, will sit down and refuse to move, or get up and walk any further, even on short walks. I am guessing this may all be due to this issue. I am going to my vets specialist orthopedic surgeon next week to discuss surgical options but am interested in hearing from anyone whose dog has had the same issue and what treatment was successful for them, particularly anyone who has been through the surgery. BTW Piper is 13 months old and weighs 1.7 kg (about 3 3/4 lbs) so she is definitely not overweight! She is also extremely lively so any surgical option where she has to remain quiet for a couple of months will be challenging! |

| The surgery is rough but if she is in pain I would do it.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear about Piper's LP. Cali who is now 8 1/2 had grade 4 in both knees. It has never bothered her. Since she has MVD my vet and I agreed to just keep an eye on her. Pixie who at about age 4 suddenly couldn't stand on her back leg had to have the surgery on one leg. I had 3 vets and an orthopedic surgeons opinion before I went ahead with the surgery. Pixie is about the same weight as Piper. She stayed overnight at the ER hospital and came home the next day. She slept for the first couple of days but after that seemed more comfortable. Pixie was older than Piper and very laid back so recovery wasn't to bad. I kept her in a crate the first week. After that I was able to put her crate inside a play yard and put her sister in with her. I let her sleep on my bed inside her crate. Surgery was successful. I hope all goes well.

| My Lexi has this problem as well, although her LP is toward the outside instead of turning inward, which is very rare. I will see an ortho specialist, but have been told to wait until she is done growing, because she is only 5 months and any surgery at this point would be too risky to her growth plates. |
