Default Luxating Patella - surgery or not?

Been for annual booster today for my Yorkie Piper, where vet has diagnosed severe luxating patella in both back legs.

Piper has always had a srange gait, often running on 3 legs, or seeming to run slightly sideways. She also often when out for a walk, will sit down and refuse to move, or get up and walk any further, even on short walks.

I am guessing this may all be due to this issue. I am going to my vets specialist orthopedic surgeon next week to discuss surgical options but am interested in hearing from anyone whose dog has had the same issue and what treatment was successful for them, particularly anyone who has been through the surgery.

BTW Piper is 13 months old and weighs 1.7 kg (about 3 3/4 lbs) so she is definitely not overweight! She is also extremely lively so any surgical option where she has to remain quiet for a couple of months will be challenging!
