| Can't find a treat that my yorkie loves? I just got panda last Tuesday. Male. Just over a year old. Not neutered. Been trying to find a treat that he loves so I can start training him. I've tried the hard carrot flavor treats but realized it was too big for him. He ate the first one when I forced it into his mouth. He's very hesitant about eating. You never lung or grab the food from my hand. I would alway have to shove it into his month. He doesn't eat the dental treat either so I guess I need to get the groomer to clean them? He obviously like our food but I don't want to get hooked on our food or begging for it when we are eating. We might try chicken and carrots for him tonight. He didn't take any of the treats from the cashier from petsmart or our vet today and they're just shocked. Last edited by Mongerhater; 12-16-2013 at 04:40 PM. |

| Have you tried soft treats? I give Lola buddy biscuits and a soft treat from Wellness. She also likes these sausage looking things petsmart has in the refridgerator (not sure what it is, the trainer gave her one). |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. My boys will not accept treats from strangers, including people at pet stores. Probably a good thing. I would not force treats into his mouth. For training, you can try using whatever he regularly eats. My main reward for my boys is pieces of their kibble. He may not be food driven. Try toys for rewards. Or he could still be adjusting to his new home. Let him take things on his own terms. My boys' favorite treats are steamed plain chicken breast, parmesan cheese, and a few other things. Very tiny quantities. Treats should never exceed 10 - 15% of total daily intake or you risk upsetting the nutritional balance a dog needs. Definitely put an end to feeding from your plate, or table scraps. It will encourage begging (I have been a little naughty in this area recently). You also risk giving him something that could make him very sick. Be sure to review the list of foods that are toxic for dogs, including grapes, onion and onion powder, raisins, chocolate. Here is a great infographic on toxic foods: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/86553624062406721/

| When we got Teddy, he wouldn't eat treats or use the chews we gave him for a while. He also wouldn't lay in any dog beds or play with any of the new toys we got him..it took him maybe a couple of weeks to get fully acclimated and comfortable...now he is a treat hound! I think that was a good suggestion above to try soft treats. The pups really love the DogNation refrigerated treats (I think that's what ShowGirl Lola was talking about...you can get these at Petsmart and maybe Target? In their refrigerated FreshPet display) as well as cut up Natural Balance logs or little cubes of FreshPet slices. We don't do too many treats though. I'd give Panda more time to adjust and see if he comes around once he's more familiar/comfortable with his surroundings. |

| Have you considered making dog treats for Panda? With a base recipe of canned pumpkin, flour, and a touch of egg, you can try all sorts of additions and see which he prefers. I'll make a batch every 3-4 months and separate the batter into sections, adding different things into each section. Bake @ 300 F, cool, and mix different flavors into baggies, and freeze. Liberty's favorites are cinnamon, parmesan cheeze, and peanut butter! Wonder if developing trust is part of the reason for his pickiness? |

| My boys are very picky about food and treats. I've went through a TON of treats, looking for the perfect ones. They do not like hard dog bones. They don't like treats that are too big for them to chew, and they are picky about flavors as well.... So far, the two things they REALLY like are the freeze dried meats and jerky type treats. Petsmart has the "Simply Nourish" freeze dried meats . If we are at Petco, we get "Halo" freeze dried liver. It comes in a plastic jar. I am very picky about the jerky I get. First off, I make sure it's made in the USA(please make sure they source their meat in the USA. Meat sourced in China has been making dogs sick). I also make sure that I can easily break the pieces easily. The boys new favorite is "Prairie Dog" steakhouse treats. We will be buying more of that because they can't get enough. Here is a good tip for you in finding treats.... If you shop at Petsmart.....As long as you are buying specialty stuff that can't be found at places like the grocery store(meaning stuff like Iams, Purina, Caninie Carryouts, Dentasticks, Beggin strips, etc), they will take back the treats if your dog doesn't like them and give you a refund on your money as long as you've got most of the bag left. I have bought and taken back Blue Buffalo Dental Bones, Wellness, Zukes, Pur-Love, Bill-Jac dog treats and more. If you aren't sure if it's a brand they will take back if your pup doesn't like it, just ask at the checkout counter and they can tell you before you buy it. This has saved me SOOO much money. I just returned a $20 bag of Blue Buffalo Bones and $9.00 bag of Zukes that the boys wouldn't touch last week. Also...Wellness has a guarantee on all of their food and treats. As long as you have a receipt to whatever store you bought it at, you can get a refund if they don't like it. The guarantee is written on the back of their packages. This is good stuff to know if you've got a Yorkie....they can be picky little munchkins!! Last edited by theporkieyorkie; 12-16-2013 at 05:44 PM. |

| We use Orijen freeze dried treats and various Primal treats. We have given her dehydrated liver and heart as well. These are training treats only. She gets carrots, apples, green beans, and dried sweet potato, as other treats. We alternate these and they are non-training treats. Do not force your baby to eat treats. You definitely do not want to associate anything negative about training. You will need to find what motivates your pup and it may not be food. Be careful if you have a pup with a sensitive tummy, giving him too many treats or switching up treats too often could upset his belly.

| All good suggestions! I found the people at privately owned dog food stores have a lot of nutritious items and helpful suggestions too. They will often give you free samples or have small bags to purchase to try. |

| Maybe he would like chewy treats? Buddy biscuits is a great brand they have them at petco and Blue Buffalo had some pretty good treats to. I don't suggest shoving it in his mouth though it might make him scared of food and hands.
