Different strokes, different folks. That's why we have so many breeds. There are many breeds I would never even consider owning. If I'm being perfectly honest, I don't like a lot of Yorkies I meet. I shouldn't say don't like... just not my kind of dog. Jackson is sort of rare, and even though in some ways he's a lot like the yorkies I read about here, in most other ways, he is not...after him, I probably wouldn't seek out a Yorkie again personally unless I really formed a strong connection again like I have with Jackson. But I can't imagine trash talking a breed. Even if I personally don't want one or have a desire to own one, I wouldn't talk down to them. I love all dogs, there's just some that aren't for me. And I should add it's the humans that have made such a bad name for yorkies (and other breeds, like pits). But I do find it funny that on EVERY forum, you see "Oh X breed is not like a dog... they are more human'. I see it often said about yorkies on here. But almost everyone I know with other breeds will say the same thing. lol. Everyone is always trying to claim their breed is more special than another. But in reality, they're all dogs first and foremost. Breed traits come into play with what humans desire, but overall it's the indiviual personality I think.

| ![]() Paris is my first Yorkie and I have had lots of dogs in my lifetime but I have never had a baby as sweet and loving as her. I was kinda scared to get a Yorkie because I heard so many bad things about them. They are hard to potty training if ever... Bark all the time... They nip at ppl and so on.. Well, she is only 17 weeks and hasn't has an accident in 3 weeks. I don't even have to create her when I leave. She loves everybody and she hasn't meet an animal she didn't like. She has never been shy or skittish. The most balanced pup I've ever seen.... Can't get enough of her and she goes everywhere with me to. I think some people just go by what others say and don't have a clue. All breeds can be difficult if not trained. Like I said though, I've never had a baby that loves me sooooooo much.! No matter where I am or what I'm doing she is right there. She loves everyone but is MY BABY GIRL! |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | ![]() I was one of those people who didn't "get" just how endearing Yorkies were until I had them. I've owned and loved dogs of all shapes and sizes for for 40+ years, but there is something truly special about these little ones. If I wanted to be logical about it, I could surmise that we are biologically programmed to bond with them because their small sizes and large eyes causes a release of oxytocin in to our blod stream, much like a baby does. But we all know it goes way beyond that. These dogs are just cool.

| ![]() I am a member of another forum that is for all sorts of animals...the way they talk down about yorkies is so lame! I cant even post pictures of my girls. I try to defend myself by saying Luma is extremely athletic and intelligent...that makes it worse lol. People really shouldnt let some yorkie owners who baby their unruly "teacups" be the example for the whole breed :/

| ![]() Just a comment about stereotypes and yorkie ownership: My family went to an American League Hockey game tonight that was having its SPCA promotion--with the purchase of a ticket and small donation, hockey fans could bring their dogs to the game with them! Hockey seems to have a reputation for having certain kinds of rabid fans, so it was fascinating to see the variety of dogs sitting with us in the dog-approved section. There were a lot of yorkies and plenty of big burly guys in hockey gear carrying their little--clearly well-loved--dogs up and down the stairs. So, the good news is that although some people may have negative preconceived notions about yorkies, there are plenty of people to disprove those theories. And, the dogs themselves were excellent ambassadors--I didn't hear a single yappy dog. (There were only a handful of dogs who made any noise at all, and they were large breeds.) It was a good night for our little "angels" to put their best paws forward.

| ![]() I have heard several people make rude comments about small dogs. I have had a few say that they "hate" small dogs. They just don't seem like dog lovers if they can make a blanket statement like that. There are several breeds of dogs, both large and small, that I wouldn't get, but I would never make such rude comments to the face of someone sitting in front of me with that particular breed/type of dog. Somehow I tend to think that maybe they are jealous or something. Why else would they make a rude comment like that. I agree with everything that Ann said. Especially the last paragraph!

| ![]() I guess people will criticize things they don't understand. At least here we know that Yorkies and their owners are way cool!

| ![]() For years I worked with a doctor who had a Yellow Lab and a Golden Retriever. He would not even acknowledge my small dogs as being part of the canine species. I suppose he thought he was being funny but there was a true undercurrent of disdain for small dogs in the attitude that he and others had about my little ones. I never put clothing or costumes on them but there is just a prejudice against small dogs. I have had both large and small dogs over decades of dog ownership. They all have their good points and their disadvantages. I would never berate any pet for being what they are. If someone decides to love and care for a Great Dane or a Chi it is none of my business. They are all dogs and they are all loveable, innocent animals. My other dogs never needed clothing to keep them warm but Gracie does get chilled easily so I have bought her some cute shirts and coats to help her stay warm in the house as well as outside. I do think some people do get a bit far out about clothing their pets and I do think some of the things they put on their pets are more for getting attention for themselves than for the pet's comfort. Probably the far out outfits set some of the big dog lovers off more than anything else. I have seen some really perverse comments from people who hate that kind of thing. It really sets them off. My opinion is that they should just not look if it bothers them that much. It's none of their business. |
